I'm about to retire my current XP Pro box for a new XP Media Centre box (hate Vista)

Theoretically it seems I should be able to image my new computer with my installed software but I have this niggling feeling that since they are different OS (well, not quite exactly the same) there's going to be an issue.

It would sure save a lot of set up time. Transfering docs and files is easy enough but it's the programs I want to transfer.

Anyone got any ideas?

I don't think it will work. The restore feature is meant to restore your entire machine including the OS or individual files from the machine that may have been accidentally deleted. However, trying to restore individual applications will not work primarily do to the registry settings. There will be no way to move the individual registry settings (of which there will be many) and the hundreds of files that would be needed easily. Additionally, dropping the old registry onto the machine may cause other issues seeing as it is a 32-bit registry on a 63-bit machine. I do not know how compatible the registries may be or if Vista x64 is like some other windows versions where turning on advanced features is actually done by a registry change. So, you may run the risk of dumbing your machine doen from 64 to 32 bit by replacing the registry.

IAN: I agree with Martin in spite of his references to Vista64 which, from your post, is not where you are going in the upgrade.

I think you would want to first re-install all the software in this case and then copy the data from the old shares (or backups). I generally recommend that, if you have the MSS space available, you copy your data files over to a "special" shared folder to make it easy to recover them. As you copy them to the new machine delete them from the MSS and, when done, delete that extra share. Makes the process easy, especially when you get interrupted (and you will). Also make sure you have a current backup of the old machine before you cannibalize it -- there is always one file you remember you forgot a year later! (Usually it is one of my tax files. This year it is my folder of old holiday letters!)

I also suggest that you also give your new PC a different name than the old one. That has caused problems for more than a few folks.

thanks guys...that's what I figured.....just that there are so many programs I've collected over the years...sigh....just finding them and updating them is going to be such a pain...

A pain, yes. But it is a good opportunity to rid yourself of a bunch of junk you no longer need/want/use! May help your performance, too! AND it is an opportunity to update the ones you keep!

But yes, it is a pain. (Keep the old box around for a while!)

Thanks...I bought an Alienware Area 51 7500 with custom parts...not because I'm a gamer but because it represented best value for money in terms of what I needed in terms of power, components and quiet......probably there are several folks here who would argue but my other choice was a Blackbird 002 and in the end it came down to money...I'm dreading setting it up since I'm self employed and every hour I spent dicking around with IT is an hour I;m not getting paid...

THAT was one of the reasons I went with the HP box....
