I have been trying to backup data files (Word, PowerPoint) to a new computer. Some copy just fine, but certain ones will not copy at all. Whether I drag or right click to copy, no icon appears when I drop, no Copying... box appears; nothing at all happens, except the file window ceases to respond and I have to forcibly end each related task on my Desktop, then wait for 30 seconds or so for the Desktop to reappear. I have tried using each of the backup copies from that computer and all respond the same way. I have tried the procedures on multiple computers on my network. Any ideas?

These are all Windows XP Pro sp2 computers on a gigabit network with tons of hard drive space, at least 1GB RAM and fast processors.

Hmmmm.... Not good!

Two comments:

(1) How long do you wait when doing this. Before I upgraded my memory (and processor) there were occasionally some very significant (and frustrating) delays in this operation. You may just not be waiting for the server to process the request and locate the proper version of the file. (I realized this at the time by watching the Task Manager in a separate RDP window as I performed the operation.)

(2) Have you tried copying the file to the MSS/WHS desktop from the console OPENED IN AN RDP SESSION? Does that behave differently?

1) I have waited up to 30 minutes with no change on a dual core processor with 3GB RAM.

2) I cannot open a backup file in a remote session in the server. It requires another computer. So, I don't know how to copy the file to the MSS/WHS desktop.

(1) OK, that should be sufficient!

(2) Oooops.... Forgot that little detail...

Let me think about this. Maybe someone else has an idea?
