I do not think it is related to the remote access selection.
The MSS does not see a match between userid and password. It's been a long time since I fooled around in that area but at one time you could set up the computer to ignore case on the passwords. You cannot do that on the MSS as far as I know -- and it certainly is not the default. You might look into that in the client such a setting could cause a problem if the "remembered" password in that case is all converted to single case.
Another possibility is that you have a nickname for the user. (Not sure I have the terminology correct there.) Somehow my wife's WinXP laptop had one and that caused me similar problems at first. I removed he nickname and all was fine.
And you could try changing the password to a new one on both ends to see if that helps. Sounds strange but I know of one case where it worked. (Or so I have been told even though I found it hard to believe!)
