Is it possible to install WHS on a PC and also have another O/S installed?  I know XP and Vista can co-exist but was wondering if WHS could be part of a dual-boot system.

Thanks,

DickDay

I believe you can dual-boot WHS -- at least I was able to do so during the beta program. I have not tried it since.

Now, to clarify: You asked about WHS in an MSS forum and I gave you the WHS answer. If you really intended to ask it about the MSS the answer is different. It is probably "possible" but you would need to hook up video, keyboard, & mouse to use it and would need to add a CD/DVD to load the software and play some partitioning games on the system drive as well. I do not know of anyone who has tried this and don't know why anyone would want to with an MSS.

I apologize for the confusion. I was asking in generalities and forgot the "headless" issue. I agree that there would be no point in attempting this with the HP MSS.

Do you remember if there is a whitepaper somewhere that addresses the steps needed to create a dual-boot box with WHS as one of the OS's? Or, is it handled like any other OS?

Thanks for the reply,

I know of nothing documented on the subject. I believe there were some mentions of it in the various threads during the WHS beta but I don't even know if those are available on-line any more.

I suspect the reason for the lack of discussion and/or information on this topic is due to the questionable need for the functionality. A server should be available to support the PCs, but if you have to choose either-or at startup, there is no support for the unit when it functions as a PC and there is no server available for other PCs during that time. And then you have the very serious problem of how to use (or avoid using) the disk space assigned to WHS.

I had set it up only because I needed access to my older PC in case my newly built Vista machine became unstable. It was set up such that when booted to WinXP it would use a separate disk. As it turned out I never did use it that way other than to verify that I could. And as I got experience with WHS I realized that I would never WANT to have a dual-boot WHS machine. I believe the server needs to be available 24x7 to meet my needs. Therefore I purchased an HP MSS when they became available. (FYI, the old machine is now set up to boot Linux -- and the WinXP dual boot is still there on it's separate disk drive and unused!)

If it were me... I wouldn't dual boot WHS and any other operating system. That sort of defeats the purpose. However, I would run WHS in vmware...
