Hi all, I am looking into building a home media system/network and I'm attracted to the HP MediaSmart product family. I would like to pose my design thoughts and see if the MediaSmart system is the way to go:

Our TV feed is from DirecTV.

We have several substantial iTunes libraries.

We have many DVDs.

And quite a few photos and downloaded video files.

We'd like to be able to access this material from multiple locations in the house, and perhaps remotely.

Ultimately it may be stored centrally, but I doubt it. It will probably always be located on multiple systems.

We would like to establish a central media server/manager that contains at least our DVDs "burned" to the hard drive(s) and maybe other media such as photos, our primary iTunes library etc.

We'd like to be able to control and manage the recordings, settings, etc of DirecTV as well as control live TV including pausing, etc, even for multiple tuners (so that different people can have their own recording preferences, show list, etc.).

We'd like to have access to other iTunes and image libraries on other computers located on the network.

We'd like the interface to be consistent, whether on a PC or a TV.

We'd like high quality playback at all locations, including 1080p and at least 5.1 surround if coded.

There's probably more, but I'm basically looking for advice on whether I should build my network out of HP MediaSmart components or look elsewhere...

Thanks

Chris

You won't be able to do anything with TV tuners; watching LiveTV. It sounds like you need a full-blown home theater PC. You can have ALL of your media stored on it, watch LiveTV, music, videos, pictures, etc. You can stream TV signals to other TVs via extenders or other PCs installing a client app with full functionality of the main PC. If you're starting out new, I can only recommend SageTV and their line of extenders. On top of whatever OS you choose. My preference being XPpro.

I agree with pretty much everything MitchSchaft said. The MediaSmart Connect (MSC) will not play DVD files as DVDs and I am fairly certain it will not play DRM protected iTunes audio (actually I do not think any media player/extender will play DRM'd iTunes other than possibly AppleTV). The closest you may come to meeting your requirements may be the SageTV HD Media Extender and I would also stick with XP Pro.

The MSC IMHO is a nice media player/extender that could have been oh so much better had it not aligned itself to Microsoft and the Media industry.

I see you've already discovered the Sage forums :D.

Yes I have. SageTV HD Media Extender has been on my short list for quite some time. Had I not gotten the MSC through the Trade in promotion I would probably have one right now.

I was talkin' about the original poster :P. He has a post over there already.
I will be converting to Sage completely here in a couple of months.
