Setting up your Windows Home Server as an Email Server is fast, easy, and best of all; it is totally FREE!  The best part about is that you can use your Microsoft given WHS hostname as your email address (yourname@xxxx.homeserver.com).

There are many commercial packages out there that can accomplish this task very well and some of them even offer a free version for those of us with little money.  However, for easy installation and configuration, I recommend using hMailServer.

hMailServer is very simple to use and offers many of the features that some expensive packages offer at no cost to you.  There are even options for setting up webmail access.

Now this is really interesting! Are you using your server to host email for a small business? How long have you been using your server to do this?

In short,

I decided to do this a while back... I currently own a web hosting company and run linux. I have been experimenting with Windows based solutions and when Windows Home Server came about, I put 2 and 2 together. I figured this is a good way for home users to take control of their email for FREE! A lot of people are restricted by their ISP's or hosting companies, but now they finally can take control.

I simply set this up to illustrate that the home user can accomplish many things very easily that they might have been afraid to try themselves.

I mainly use the email server for forum registrations and non-business uses.
