Creating an FTP server on your Windows Home Server can prove to be very advantageous.  There are many times when using the web interface just doesn’t seem practical.  Also, you are no longer limited to how many people have the ability to upload and download from your WHS.

Having an FTP server on WHS can also allow syncrinization of files between off site computers and WHS while giving greater flexibility. I am personally displeased with the lack of a download monitor for WHS while using the web page and therefore the setup of an FTP was necessary for me.

First, I chose FileZilla because of it is simple to setup, easy to maintain, and FREE.  There is also more security in FileZilla than the included (but not installed) IIS FTP server. FileZilla supports FTP as well as FTPS using Explicit SSL/TLS.  I am not going to explain setting up the latter, but the simpler FTP.

I use 'Second Copy 7' to auto FTP my documents folders to my web space. They need to come up with a WHS addin for it!

Isn't second copy backup software the supports ftp transfers? I will have to check it out, looks neat. This would help an offsite computer backup to your WHS running an FTP server. I might have to re-visit that article with an update.

Ooops... nevermind, it costs money!

It doesn't have to :P

I understand, but my goal is to do these tutorials with Free software. People spent enough money on their home servers already!

I tried to install Filezila and I couldn't. Stated I didn't have access rights. I was at the WHS desktop, located the install file and tried to install. Any suggestions?

Works like a charm.

Please post the solution for future readers... Thanks in advance!

(I suspect that the file was blocked and you needed to unblock it in the properties?)

When you find this message that the file was locked or you do not have access to it when an EXE, click the right button on the file and go to properties, find a written UNBLOCK button in the window will open stating the properties of the that you want to unlock.
Click UNBLOCK then click OK.
Once that's done try again to access the file it will be available for normal use it.
