I think you'll have to start from scratch if you want to replace drive 0.
Categories: Hard Drives/Storage
Hi, I have recently just purchased a 1TB Mediasmart but I want to upgrade all HDD to 1Tb therefore I will have in total 4TB which will be split as RAID 1 using WHS. Can anybody recommend me good HDD’s to purchase. Also I’m curious how it will be possible to upgrade drive 0 due to the OS installed.
i like this one

I spoke to a colleague and they recommended me this

the only reason why i said the barracuda is because that's what i run in my comp and they are very good and dependable.
Sorry I'm just really new to all this. What I'm trying to achieve is store all my data in a redudant evironment where I can also acces remotley via xbox 360 to view movies etc.. Is this the correct solution?
Hardware RAID isn't possible and I don't think software raid is either. Check out this thread

If you're wanting redundant backups, just enable duplication.
Although, you can view files just fine from the xbox, regardless. Use the new PVConnect addin or the stock media player option for media sharing.
I have enabled the folder duplication on the folders but when I remove the hard drive and put it a external caddy, I cannot view the files and folders.
Does this mean I can only view the files via the Home Server? Also I'm trying to get an understanding why people have NAS connected to the Home server? Is this for expanding the hard drive capacity or a backup solution?
Oh, I see. Yeah, they do that for extra storage. You can set an external hard drive, or whatever, for storage only and not part of the WHS hard drive pool. With PP1 installed, there's an option for that when you install the HDD.
What about removing the HDD and placing it into an external caddy to view data in case my HP Medismart stop working? Because I tested this and I could not view any data. Is this right?
As long as it's not in the pool, you can connect an external deal via USB. I'm talking your shared folders, and not PC backups. I think that's correct.
What do you mean in the pool? Sorry I don't understand. Do you mean you have eject the hard drive and then remove the HDD from the server?
Pool in WHS means that you add the drive to the space that the shares have access to. This means that you dont have Drive letters. For example if you put an extra two hard drives then you will not have E and F it will magic into D as in the size/space.
As to what Hard drive I would recommend that you go for a Seagate as it comes with 5 years warranty great since WHS has folder duplication when there is more then one hard drive.
How do I check if it is in a POOL? Because when I got to storgae all it says is Storgae hard drive. Also I'm ejecting one of the drives but my network says critical. Is this right?
Hi I've noticed 1.5TB hard drive is avilable Seagate. Anybody know if these are any good?
I like the Hitachi Drives...

While I have not personally tried one yet, I have seen posts from others who have and report it works just fine.

I'd like to check the status of a sata hard drive pulled from another computer. Can I place it inside the MSS and not have it as part of the
Not have it as part of the Storage Pool...??
If that is your question the answer is YES. As such it will become Disk E: and be accessible through the desktop (RDP).

You understood correctly. Could you be more specific as to how to see it?

You would see it in the server's "My Computer".
You can get to My Computer by either (a) using Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc.exe, aka "RDP") to access the the server desktop from a client or (b) by using the Advanced Admin Console Add-In which will allow you to have access to My Computer (and a LOT of other "desktop" functions) through your normal WHS Console.

Hi I dows anyone know what he maximum storage the HP mediasmart board can handle? I wish to purchase 4 x 1.5 TB hard drives to total the server of 6TB
Will it handle this?

Yes, the HP MSS will handle the 4x1.5TB configuration.(The maximum total storage for the MSS is 16TB.)
I do NOT recommend a 4x1.5 configuration though. Leave the 500GB in Slot ) (System Disk) and add 3x1.5TB. Then expand via the eSATA port with a 4-bay external expansion unit.
The reason for this suggestion is that the System Drive is only used as a "landing pad" for your data and is generally not used for storage, rendering the extra 1TB in that slot rather a waste until the other MSS drives all have less than 10GB on each. Only then will the System Drive be used for data storage. I believe that it would be more effective at that point to add an expansion unit. (The reference here is the MS White Paper on the Data Extender.) Also, the effort to replace a System Drive is a a bit more involved -- certainaly can be done, just a longer process involving re-installing PP1 as well as all Add-Ins, etc. And it is even more sensitive if you want to save existing data in the process. (If you are going to do this it is easiest to do right at the start with a new unit or completely re-loading an existing one.
But you can do what you want.

Hi thanks.... but currently when I went to my computer on the WHS via RDP it only view 1 logical hard drive 500GB but I have 2 which have the folder duplication on. However when check disk management I can view my other hard drive. Does this mean my data currently is written on both?
I want to build the WHS to duplicate all data E.g. drive 1 duplicate to drive 2 and 3 to 4. At the moment I want to make sure I can do this and ir will work before I put any data on it. I have some for testing but everything is on external hard drives.
Can anyone help?
Looking at My computer, or really any of the true Windows based disk utilities can be deceiving. This is because of the way that Microsoft has implemented the drive pools in WHS. So, ignore what My Computer is telling you and instead get your information from the Server Storage tab of the WHS console or install the Disk Management add-in which will give you some different information. In general, it is a bad idea to directly access the disks in WHS directly, you should always use the shares so that your changes are recorded correctly in WHS and that you get the benefits of Duplication and storage balancing.
