No, sir. If it dies, then the hard drives have no motherboard to communicate with. If I'm understanding you correctly. And any type of RAID just isn't an option.
Enabling duplication will do what you're looking for. And the drives don't have to be the same size like with RAID.

Hi, I am just curious if the mediasmart decides to pack in, will my hard drive still be accessible via using an external adapter to view the content on it? Because I want store all my data on this server but want everything to be duplicated as RAID 1 function.
Microsoft was working on the Backup "shares" to an external hard drive for PP1 however this was put on hold to fix the error.
So maybe Microsoft will release this as so as they can.
I hope they have this in their next update! It will be great if the server can do this. That is where the HP have gone wrong with this server. They should implement a RAID function which will also copy the OS. To have the server redundant
If any of the drives fail 1/2/3 (not at the same time)......I will not loose data will I (If I have folder duplication on)?
Anything stored in shared folders can be duplicated in a manner SIMILAR to RAID. The big advantage over RAID is that if the server fails the disks can be read as an NTFS volume from another computer. If a RAID volume fails you need to re-create the controller hardware -- generally with exactly the same hardware.
All the shares can also be backed up to another disk using PP1 functionality.
Backups can also be duplicated and/or backed up to another disk using the WHS BDBB Add-In.
And there are also Add-Ins that will permit automated backing up to off-site locations for your critical files. (Since they depend on internet connectivity you want to think carefully about using this capability for large files and/or large numbers of files as there is a performance --bandwidth-- limitation.)
Bottom line: I believe MSS/WHS does what you need, and does it BETTER that RAID.

Sounds good! However if drive 0 fails? Is that the end, will I loose everything? becuase thats where the OS installed?

If Drive 0 fails you can re-install the software (and Add-Ins) using the factory reset capability. (Will also need to re-install PP1 qand any other updates.)
Since Drive 0 is not used for any data storage (backup or shares) unless necessary (other drives fiull or in a duplicated 2-drive system), you will not loose any data as long as everything is duplicated. One advantage to having 3-drives (or more) installed is that NO data will be stored on Drive 0 as long as there is space on the other drives.
