I know the title sounds a bit wierd but I have noticed many times that my MSC unit will come out of standby all by itself, has anyone else observed this behavior? It would not be so bad if it went back to sleep on its own but it does not.

is your MSC connected via ethernet? I have mine connected through ethernet and i have noticed on numerous occasions that mine has powered itself back on. I wonder if that might be the key. I do recall some NICs have had issues with powering on the computers when connected to the network, and that is why I theorize its possible for the MSC to exhibit the same behavior. Any other thoughts?

Yes mine is connected to the ethernet and as you I also suspect that something from the ethernet is waking it up but that really should not happen. None of my other ethernet connect media players wake themselves up and I have had some hooked up for over 3 years!

I have also observed the led pulsing (the unit is in stand by) so to speak but the unit does not come out of stand by, well at least not while I was watching the LED.

It is good to hear that I am not crazy. Later today if I get the chance Iwill submit a ticket to support.

I submitted an email service request 2 days ago and once again I got an auto response that says that they typically respond with in an hour! It took them 6+ days to respond to the last one.

My favorite part of this is that they put advertisements into the auto response!

I see this behavior as well! Any response yet from HP?

The Connect has an automatic reset option if it is not used for certain time.
Looks like something maybe corrupted and fails to go back to stand-by mode after it wakes up.
My suggestion would be to go to Settings and try a reset to factory defaults.

In terms of power consumption, there is very little difference between being in stand-by and ON (but with no streaming), so if you don't mind the slightly brighter LED, I would not worry that much.

Please provide a little more detail on the reset option when not used for a certain time. It resets if the units is powered on (not in standby), is that correct? What is the purpose of the reset?

I am not sure if you are following this particular issue but I am the 3rd person to report this behavior...so unless the others have corrupt firmware then I doubt it is my firmware that is corrupt. However, I will try a reset to factory defaults.

Knowing that there is not much difference in power consumption between standby and not is not very comforting. What you are saying in essence is that from a power consumption standpoint there is no point in putting the MSC into standby!

IMO the unit should stay in standby when it is put into standby. If it does not then it is a bug and HP needs to address it. It would have been nice to have a power off switch on the front of the unit. More and more folks are becoming much more aware of how much power is being consumed by their idling electronic gadgets and are powering them off. The easier they are to power off the more they like the product.

I have recently purchased a 'Smart Strip' and should receive it shortly. Maybe that will solve my issue.

Thank you for posting back and helping out.

The reset (while in stand-by mode only) is supposed to provide a far more reliable product while it is ON. It is a very common practice in CE devices.
It is not that your firmware is corrupt, but there is always a possibility that during operation some state variable has not been reset completely. With networking, video output states, DRM, etc, this is not uncommon.
I am not saying it is not a bug, but a reset to factory defaults, may help.
The Connect is a very low-power device. Stand-by is anywhere from 5.5 to 9 W (depending on whether you are in wired or wireless mode and other variables) - idle, but ON, is about 1 W more.

Thank you for the information! Knowledge is power!

By the way. Try this:

Hit the reset button at the back of the Connect, let it reboot and then turn it off. In my system, the automatic power on seems to be fixed - at least for now.

I will give it a try! Thanks!
