I have Windows XP Home Edition on my secondary machine.  My primary machine is runnig with Visa 64-bit, so could not install the EX470 there.  When I attemp to install the PP1 Beta it is telling me the Version of Windows I have does not match the update you are trying to install.  Can anyone explain this to me.  Perhaps I am trying to install it in the wrong place or something.  I would really like to get the 64-Bit capability.  Also when my freinds log in remotely they cannot get to my pictures. All they see is a folder named Photos with a file named .DS_storage, but cannot fing a program to look at the contents.

Thank you

Marv

PP1 installs on the MSS/WHS unit, not on your client.

And to add to Johns reply, once you install the PP1, the 64 bit connector software will be added to //SERVER/Software/Add-Ins.

I would suggest copying the Home Server Connector Software folder over to a USB flash drive for easy access, and if I remember correctly you'll need to install the new version on your XP Home too.

Thanks to both, you and John.  I think I am dead in the water.  I have a Toshiba laptop with XP Pro on it, and am finding I cannot set up Remote.  Service Pack 3 seems to be raising caine with any operation of MS Home Server.  It says to insert the SP3 CD which I did but it lists a bunch of.dll's that it is unable to find.  I even downloaded a lot of them and it still refuses them all.  Also tried the work arounds suggested such as deleteing a couple of Keys in HK_U with no results in my case.  If I am understanding John's comment correctly, you must put the PP1 update file onto the Server desktop and then run it from a remote connection.  I will be darned if I can figure out how to get anything to what I would consider a desk top on the server.  Maybe there is another screen that I am not aware of.

Anyway I guess I will wait a few weeks and hope that the final release will auto install.  I just received another bombshell.  Comcast has informed me that servers are not legal on residential!

From the "DOC" file that is included in the PP1 Beta "ZIP" file:

• Copy the update package to your home server (e.g. to \\server\software).
• Run the Windows Home Server Administrator's Desktop (you can find the step-by-step instructions on How to Access the Windows Home Server Administrator's Desktop later in the document)
• From the administrator's desktop run the update package (e.g. \\localhost\software\WHS_KB944289-v1-x86-ENU.exe) to update the server to this internal release of Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 Public Beta. Be sure to right click on the update package - WHS-KB944289-v1-x86-ENU.exe, click properties and select unblock

JBick Comment #1: You can access the MSS/WHS Shared Folders from the MSS desktop. Best to access there rather than trying to drill down to them in My Computer.

JBick Comment #2: If this does not work, copy the file from the Software folder to the MSS Desktop and run it from there -- delete afterwards.

To connect your Windows Home Server Administrator's Console from any home computer running Windows XP Professional, follow these steps:

1. On your home computer, click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to Accessories.
2. In the Accessories menu, point to Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.
3. In the Computer box, type the name of your home server.
4. Click Connect.
5. When the Log On to Windows dialog box appears, type "Administrator" as the user name and use your Windows Home Server Console password as the password your, and then click OK.

The Remote Desktop window opens, and you see the desktop settings, files, and programs that are on your home server. (JBick Comment #3: You will probably have to close a big full-screen warning message first!)

---------------

SP3 is not a likely cause for any Home Server problems. You should resolve any SP3 problems first, before proceeding with either PP1 or Remote Access.

------------

You have not provided any details on your remote connection problems so it is impossible to provide assistance on that until you do. (If you are taking advantage of the HP/TZO offer I would suggest placing a call to TZO. They have a truly FANTASTIC support team and probably get you working quicker than the turn-around here.)

There a number of "Remote Access" threads here and, especially, on http://MediaSmartServer.net that you should search to see if your problems may have already been addressed. (Also WeGotServed has a number of remote access threads but many/most are more generic and less oriented to the HP MSS.)

---------------

Your Comcast Service Agreement is not something we can solve for you, but there are MANY folks doing remote access that use Comcast.

---------------

Good luck!
