You will need to forward/open ports 443 & 4125 to the IP address of your MSS server.
Some people will say you also need port 80, but I suggest you DO NOT allow access via port 80, port 80 is un-encrypted, and your user name and password for your home system should always be sent encrypted for even something as simple as the Webshare photo gallery. Once again Microsoft drops the ball in protecting users.
This site has some decent help http://portforward.com/routers.htm

Hi,
I'm new to this website and using the Media Server so please bare with me.
Could someone help me please? I've just purchased the HP470 Media Server and I'm trying to enable remote access to the Server. I have a US Robotics Wireless Router (US9108) and no matter what I try, I cannot get the router configured and enable remote access. I don't fully understand port forwarding although I have tried what I think is right, but still no good.
Could someone offer any assistance please?
Thanks,
Rob.
First, it may be helpful to know whether the problems you are expereincing is due to ISP port blocking. There is a good forum on that discussion at: http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsHomeServer/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1849610&Si... Second, even if your ISP blocks port 80, you can still have a good remote access expereince using the TZO DNS service as it only requires port 443. MS WHS and MS Live DNS defaults to port 80 and this can lead to "misleading" messages under those curcomstances where port 80 is blocked and port 443 is open. Can you show a screen shot here of your port forwarding menu on your router? Maybe someone can help see where the port forwarding is not correct. Lastly, HP support can also guide you through some of this.

Hi,
I think I've forwarded port 443, see picture, but not sure if it right as the router dosen't have a page called 'Port Forwarding'. I'm lead to believe the page 'Virtual Servers' is the same.
Also. I have Upnp enabled but, when WHS tests the router, it says its not Upnp compatable???
Thanks for the sugestions so far but still no remote access.
With 443 can you open the web site?
https://your-server-name.com
You must use the https:// (notice the s for secure)
That should get you in to the Web site.. You will need to open 4125 for remote access. (Remote Desktop).
Also the 4th line down where that "Auto-test" checks your website, it will always check port 80, so you will get an error there, which is ok if you just use 443 assuming we get that working.
I do not understand why everyone is so reluctant to recommend calling TZO. You get a free TZO connection with the HP MSS and their support is unbelievably good. Not that you will not eventually solve your problem on this (or other) forum(s), but the latency for posts is rather significant.
TZO is the exception to the generally poor support seen these days. Folks speek English (American) and they are knowledgeable AND THEY CARE. They go above and beyond the simple answer, find out what you want to do and help u\you do it! And there have been many examples of where the problems they helped with are not even in the "TZO end" of things.
They are an "island in the ocean' -- and a rather nice one to boot. Give them aq call!

Jonesr22,
Any luck? Also I re-read your post, and you may need to use the port-forwarding? Since I'm not sure how your virtual server thingy works but I'll give you my best guess. There could be someplace else you need to enable a virtual server? Which may come in handy if you can figure it out, as you may be able to assign a few ports to one server, and with the click of a mouse button open and close your server for external network traffic. My experience with virtual servers is limited, and with Apache web server, a virtual server had a unique name, so I'll apply that here http://www.your-server.com/Gallery uses one set of IP & ports, while http://www.your-server.com/Forum uses another set. your router hands off the traffic depending on the site name opened. And your-server.com is the external name/IP of your router. In the screen shot above where it says server name, you might try to remove spaces from the name to make it easier to access. That's just my guess, I could be 100% wrong.
Hi,
Many thanks to everyone who has helped me here. I've been trying all sorts last night but still no success. One comment above mentioned using https rather than http. That doesn't work but with http, I do get a message box up that asks me for my username and password - see attached screen shot. When I type in my user account name and strong password the box re-appears asking for it again, and again until after 3 attempts the screen turns purple saying "Access denied". I'm not sure what to do here. I've tried disabling my Internet Security, thinking it was that but still no joy. Any suggestions anyone?
Thanks again,
Rob.

Well that is the log in window for your router. Did you try my suggestions of changing your virtual server names to those without spaces, and trying to access your server with a directory name? ie www.yourservername.com/virtualservername/ try with and without the trailing "/"
But it looks like port 80 is being used by your router, if the above virtual server stuff doesn't work, you'll have to use port forwarding. And since the router is not using 443, you might simply be able to forward 443 to your MSS for web access, and 4125 if you also want to use remote access. All web access would then need to be secure https:// which is what you want any way.
Are you using the TZO service? If you are and had called them you very likely would already be operational.
If you are not, I suggest enrolling for the first year if for no other reason than the support you will get. (And it will likely be so good you will be convinced to use them after that first year!)
You may also want to browse the posts/threads/forums dealing with Remote Connections and/or your router over on http://MediaSmartServer.net

Hi,Yes I am using TZO service and have been on their website digging around. There are a few suggestions there I've tried but still no good. One thing I have noticed on my Router is the attached picture which if I understand it correctly blocks all incoming IP Traffic. I'm going to contact US Robotics to see what I need to fill in the boxes, see below 2nd picture. Hopefully that's it.A few people have suggested not trying and accessing the router remotely from within my own network. I've asked a friend to try and log in but still no good. I'll wait and see what US Robotics say when I e-mail them today. Thanks again to everyone.
Rob.

All,
Many thanks for your suggestions but it appears that my port 443 is being blocked and I cannot un-block it. I'll use my WHS as a backup device as intended.
Thanks to all.
Rob.
Just because 443 is blocked, doesn't mean you can't forward an external port of say 4433 to an internal 4433. So when you open a url it would look like:
https://www.yoursite.com:4433/
You will also have to change the port the IIS web service listens to. (just a few mouse clicks) You could leave it at 443 and have the router forward those ports, but make life simple and just keep them the same.
But no need to give up because your ISP blocks 443.
You can even change what ports remote desktop service listens to, use "the google" It requires hacking the registry, or using a program to do it for you.
