So I unistalled PP1 BETA, reinstalled it and reinstalled the new WINDOWS CONNECT software on my clinet computer but still the same results...I disabled the network notification so I would get the pop ups every second...
Now, maybe the problem is caused by the messed up HP April Update?
If so, I was led to think that there is no way to uninstall the HP April update without doing a server restore...is this correct?
Becuase if I can uninstall the HP Aupdate then I might be able to solve the problem Im having
Categories: Patches and Upgrades
You can download the beta update from Microsofts CONNECT website...
Im not sure if Im allowed to link to it...so I wont....
In order to download, you must have previosuly enrolled in the Beta Program.....
Im downloading now.....
Aslo I noticed that Im having the same issue on my server...at first I thought it was a client side software issue...but when I start up the WINDOWS HOME CONSOLE on my MSS ( remote desktop'd in ) the network status shiled is flashing GREEN...then YELLO...then GREEN....so Im thinking its a server software problem
In addition, I noticed that the docs for the PP1 BETA update states that the version should show 6.0.1770.0 after installing PP1...but my server shows 6.0.1771.0
You definitely have the correct version. According to the MS Home Server Team Blog, the release candidate is build 1771, which looks like what you have.
Seems like you're seeing some odd behavior, keep us posted on your progress.
Anyone else install it yet? How's it going for you?
Welp no luck....
Heres what I tried...
Uninstalled PP1, uninstalled ALL add-ins, reminstalled PP1....
and tried to reinstall the add-ins....but it would not let me....it gave me an error code 1620 and told me to contact the vendor....
I have many addins but the typical once that everyone else has plus AVSZ Antivirus and that didnt install either....
I gave it one more shot with still the same results...
So I gotta wonder....is it due to the HP Aril Update?
I want to get rid of that update so bad.....
SO I think I will...now the question is do I have to do a factory restore in order to do it ( the one that formats all HDs ) or can I just do a server restore ( that just restores the OS and leave all data alone )?
Installed and works fine for me! It definately has nothing to do with the HP April update.
PP1 Installation
I decided to be a risk-taker in spite of saying several times around here that I wouldn't any more. I uninstalled ALL Add-Ins, including F-Secure and GridJunction, as well as the PerfectDick 2008 application. Then I waited for DEMIGRATOR to be inactive (no balancing), restarted my MSS, opened an RDP session, waited for DEMIGRATOR to stop and restarted a second time. (Y'all know I preach paranoia being a "good" thing around computers, right?)
Opened the RDP session again and moved the install file from the Software folder to the desktop.
- Why did I do that? Because when I open the properties for files in my Software folder I NEVER see the place to check for "unblock". Simple solution is to move the file to the desktop, execute it from there and delete it when done. (Sometime I need to ask you guys where that checkbox is...)Ran the install with no problems or issues. When it completed I used the old connector software on my Vista client to go to the MSS/WHS and clicked on the (now yellow) shield. Selected the link and downloaded the new connector install file. The instructions did not state this, but I then CLOSED the connector. Only then did I install it on my client. Tried and re-tried the "automatic" discovery for the MSS without success, so the third round was "manual". No problems there as it already knew the name for my MSS and immediately proceeded to complete the installation.
Played with it a bit then starting adding back all my Add-Ins:
- MSS Drive Labeler 1.0.0.5
- WHS Disk Management 1.0.7.3
- WHS Toolkit 6.0.1639.0
- Remote Notification 1.0.0.47
- Advanced Admin Console 0.4.3
- Tab Reorder 0.7.3
- Event Viewer 1.1.0.0
At that point paranoia kicked in, so I checked that DEMIGRATOR.EXE was inactive and did a restart!
Everything appears to be functioning properly at this point. Interestingly all the Add-Ins also seem to have picked up all their original settings and all my tabs were back in the original order already. Other that a lot of console restarting this was painless! Took under an hour all told. I've been playing (informal testing) for almost 2 hours now.
I have not (yet) re-installed F-Secure, PerfectDisk 2008 or GridJunction. The first and last are standard Add-Ins but they both have new beta versions today so I need to pick those up first. PerfectDisk requires an RDP session but I want to update/reinstall my XP client before I do that.
Observations
The balancing is occurring LESS frequently and it is definitely quicker.
The entire feel is "snappier". I do not doubt that the transfer speeds are faster but I have not attempted ant measurements.
There is a little less "background" activity for the CPU. Not sure why, but the Idle process is right at 99% with nothing crossing the 1% threshold now. Before this was in the 96-98% range (without the three missing packages being active).
I am a happy camper so far! What has YOUR experience been?

Great post JohnBick!
I'm not planning on installing the beta until this weekend, but when I do, I plan on following your instructions exactly.
Anyone else taken the plunge yet? So far it's seems to be about a 50/50 mix between those who have issues with the beta and those who don't. Wait, that kind of sounds like it should be a poll...
Not sure if it was already mentioned or not, but to stop the annoying add-in install notifications (for those of us not wanting to install the optional add-ins) simply move the add-in's MSI file out of your Software\Add-Ins share. I kept getting the repetitive notifications despite checking the Ignore checkbox and moving the add-in's MSI files out of the Add-Ins folder resolved the problem for me just fine.
Interesting.... I did not get any warnings before I installed those Add-Ins in my post above. Nor have I received/seen any warnings about three others that I have as "Available" but have not yet installed. Simple to move them out, but where was that setting? I do not recall being prompted for any "ignore" checkbox during the install and I do not see one anywhere now.
And yes, I have the RC installed:
- Windows Home Server Console: 6.0.1771.0
- Windows Home Server Backup & Restore: 6.0.1771.0
- Windows Home Server Drive Extender: 6.0.1771.0
- Windows Home Server Remote Access: 6.0.1771.0
- Windows Home Server Storage Manager: 6.0.1771.0

Okay heres what I tried to resolved my STOP LIGHT issue...
-I uninstalled PP1
-I uninstalled all ADD-INS
-I moved all my ADD-INS from the ADD-IN folder
-I installed PP1
-I moved all ADD-INS back to the ADD-IN FOLDER
-Tried to reinstall ADD-INs and got ERROR CODE 1618
All this was done from my server....
Any ideas
FYI I have the HP APril Update installed
The "Ignore" check box I'm talking about is found in the WHS consol app. Open the consol and click on the "Network Health" toolbar item and you will see all of the notifications stored for your WHS. Each notification will have an "Ignore" check box on it. When you check that box, the WHS should ignore the notification warning (i.e. the notification to install the MSS's optional add-ins in this case) and your system's health should go back to green (i.e. healthy). After installing PP1 I found that checking the Ignore check box worked initially to clear the notifications, but then they it just kept resetting itself after a while. Thus, removing the uninstalled add-in's MSI file from the Software\Add-Ins share stopped the problem.
Ahhhhh.... THAT "Ignore"! Missed the connection there!
FWIW, I have never gotten "Health" warnings about uninstalled Add-Ins, either before PP1 or after. Cannot help but wonder why! Seems like many (most?) others see that. Wonder if there is a setting somewhere??
ALSO, anything "ignored" resets at midnight -- I've watched it happen many times, both before PP1 and again last evening. Nothing new there.

In order to get the health notification warnings about having add-ins waiting to be installed you must have the latest HP v1.2.4 update installed on your MSS (i.e. the one that was pulled soon after it was released). That feature is actually part of the HP MSS package and not part of WHS itself.

Hi JesD,
Try this:
* Move all your add-in .msi files to another directory ABOVE the add-ins directory or somewhere out of the Software\Add-Ins directory.
* Once the add-ins folder is empty, uninstall any add-ins you want to uninstall. The uninstalls should work fine.
* For each add-in you want to install:
- Move the add-in .msi to the add-ins directory.
- From the WHS console, add-ins settings panel, available add-ins, click the install button.
- If you get an error such as 1618 or 1620, click install again until it works.
- Once installed, move the add-in .msi file OUT of the add-ins directory.
I know, this is goofy and horrific, but it SHOULD get you going for now. HP is aware of what is going on and it is being addressed, trust me!
BTW, if you don't have the 1.2 or later update, you won't have any problems, so if you wish, do a server RECOVERY (NOT a factory reset), then install PP1 and you should have a wonderful experience as far as the HP software and PP1 are concerned.
I hope this is helpful, and although I'm not official HP support, this should get you going with the 1.2 update and PP1.
Jerry
I've also had the same issue as JesD. I uninstalled the PowerPack for now.
I'm going to wait until HP sorts this mess with their update for the update.
I'm very disappointed with HP. First the update was scheduled to be released in February, then delayed until April, then released in May and pulled within hours, then we get the "sorry folks but the update that will fix the update will be out very soon" line for the past three weeks.

Thanks J.....Im gonna try it one more time....
ANd Im trusting you regarding the update to the update that messed my MSS up...lol
with the PP1 out in BETA and HP Update 1.3 on the way, do we know if the DISABLED SHADOW COPIES has been answered?
For those of you who dont know, the SHAODW COPIES was disabled on the MSS....no one knows why....so some are scared to enable it.....
Anyone know if this issue has been addressed at all...Cindy?
HP did not disable this feature. A few months ago we learned with the rest of the user community that Version Shadowing Service "VSS" was enabled by default in the system builder version of WHS, however it was not enabled in OEM versions, most importantly it was not enabled on the HP Media Smart Server.
Microsoft disabled the feature for "sysprep" systems. Sysprep is a Microsoft process for OEMs to create an OS image which has an embedded Microsoft license product key. More specifically it was disabled in what is called the "sysprep script."
It is not clear from Microsoft whether this was a feature they wanted to be enabled or disabled prior to release, and the differences between the two OS versions may be the result of that confusion. Microsoft has not provided HP with a mechanism to enable this feature and has indicated that HP should not enable this feature. Therefore, HP support officially states that this is not supported. It is not clear if, or at what point this feature will be disabled on the system builder version of WHS as well.

thanks you for clearing that up.....
and Im hoping this gets resolved soon becuase the SHADOW COPY feature was one major reason I got the MSS
Just to chime in, I've installed PP1 and I haven't really had any issues. However, I didn't have ANY add-ins installed when I installed PP1.
Is there anyone who has NO add-ins installed (from any source), who downloaded the PP1 Beta, and who has experienced new issues?
For those of you who are experiencing unusual issues since the PP1 beta, you might want to try un-installing all of your add-ins, to see if you still experience the problem.
Let me know your results.
Cindy

Well I know Ive spoken to some people that did get the 1.2 HP Update and installed PP1 that had problems....but once they removed their add-ins and moved the add-ins from the add-in folder on their MSS ( installed or not ), their problems seemed to have gona away
I installed PP1 yesterday and installation went without a hitch. My MSS has to 1.2 HP update but not the full blown update with pvconnect and mcafee. I did move all my addins out of the addin folder first before installing PP1. But I did not uninstall them and I also had Perfect Disk installed. Also upgrading the connector software for my other computers went without a hitch. I was even able to upload from work a 450mg file to the server remotely without timing out. Which I was never able to do before. MSS temps remained the same as well as CPU usage before and after installing PP1. All in All everything is running fine so far. Hope this helps.
Cactus...did you report the high CPU usuage to the MS Connect website....if you do, you could get access to a newer version of PP1 - Build 1776.
This solved all my high CPU usuage. Running iTunes ( streaming to 3 AppleTVs ), Zune Player ( Streaming to 3 Xbox360s) and about 8 add-in, my CPU usuage went from 95% - 100% down to 10-15%.....

I installed the update......and heres what I found so far
....
After installing the update, my notifications are going crazy!!!
The damn thing keeps popping up to remind me about all the add-ins that are ready to install....so I tried to go to the NETWORK STATUS to check mark the notifications in order to ignore them....but I went there and its even crazier...It scrolls all the risks....then they disappear...then they reappera, etc etc....it just keeps doing this
So it looks like with the update, a new version of the home server connection software was placed in \\YOURSERVER\SOFTWARE\Home Server Connector Software
I installed it ( to my cleint computer) in hopes this will solve it....but no luck....
Now my network status icon in the tray not only does what I listed abouve, but it changes from YELLOW to GREEN....YELLOW TO GREEN, etc etc...
I think I can disable the notifications by right nouse clikcing on the icon but I want to try to resolve this...
Anyone see anything like what Im describing???
