For those of you interested in helping Microsoft test their PP1 Beta, check out their beta signup site at:  PP1 Beta Testers Signup Info.

The HP MSS Update can be downloaded independently of the PP1 Beta.  So, you can take the HP MSS Update before or after the PP1 Beta download, and you do not need to be part of the PP1 Beta group in order for the HP MSS Update to function.  Likewise, you do not need to take the HP MSS Update in order for the PP1 Beta to function on the MSS.

We would certainly appreciate any feedback concerning results or bugs you might find, either from the PP1 Beta and/or the MSS Update.  Please let us know whether or not you have downloaded the PP1 Beta and/or the MSS Update in your configuration, and use this discussion thread to let us know how it is going for you.

Based on what many of us have read in the various discussion forums around the web, the PP1 DE bug fixes were apparently non-trivial, and those of us who have been software developers can  imagine the amount of work and testing which has gone into the Beta effort.  Likewise, the MSS team has been working hard to ensure that they get the best Update out to you as soon as feasible, while testing sufficiently for PP1 Beta dependency issues.

I would really like to say more about the expected dates for both the PP1 Beta and MSS Update availability, but am not permitted to do so.  Both Microsoft and HP would not be happy campers if I did.  Check this site frequently for updates over the next few days.

I installed the HP Update when it was released. I think it installed okay(what version is the update?), but for some reason I no longer had MediaSmartServer showing on i-Tunes on any of my computers (3 - 2 Vista Business SP1 and 1 XP Professional SP3). After uninstalling PV Connect and rebooting both the server and my client machines MediaSmartServer was back on i-Tunes. Since I couldn't find anything in the HP Help regarding how to use PV Connect, I will leave it uninstalled. (Some directions would be nice). I did query Microsoft Connect about the HP update and compatability with their Power Pack, and their answer was the same as your -- no problem with compatability. Also the tech mentioned he thought the PV Connect looked interesting and was going to look into installing it on his machine.

Alright Cindy Microsoft Came through with their end of the deal. So when is HP going to send through their update? (Soon)

nobody knows, mappy

Today after installing PP1 Beta, Home Network Health reported:
"HP Smart Server updates available"
"There are File conflicts" - "insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service"
"There are File conflicts" - "an internal error occured"

Nothing in the event viewer to explain these two file conflicts.
How do I resolve these conflicts?
Should I resolve these conflicts before installing Smart Server Updates?

After installing PP1 Beta, Media Smart Server is running flat out 12 hours later:

My server is currently hitting the HDD's hard since installing the beta.

Just had a look at task manager on the server and the npage file size is sitting at 998 MB

I guess you don't have enough memory?

I installed this 12 hours ago and it is working fine for me! No CPU spikes, etc...

The HP MSS comes with a standard 512mb. Its not designed to be upgraded as this is the amount of ram that Ms recommends for the server.
Upgrading the ram voids your warranty.
So 512 should be enough.

Well I am seeing this...

It just appeared....

Done a factory reset. then re-installed the PP1 beta and so far everything looks good. HDD has stopped being thrashed and page file use is now back to normal.
Installed itunes again and running fine, now just need to move all the content back over again.

I dont have the HP update installed now, and dont have any add ins installed either

Installed PP1 beta today, and had some problems with the install of connecting software. Finally got it installed, but kept getting warning notifications that I had addins to install. I couldn't get to Home Server through the connector software as I kept getting a blank blue screen after logging into the server. I can log into the server through remote connector, and then after clicking on Home Server console and waiting awhile I can get to the console. The Addins didn't indicate any problem, so i turned off the Health alert on all my client machines. No more addin notifications, but still getblank blue screen when using the connector on client computer. So tomorrow bug reports to Microsoft. I'm wondering if the latest HP update is causing the problem or the addins? Sounds like Favious has found a solution.

Well, it's not enough. I also have the HP MSS and upgraded ram to 2GB. You need to do that, as the MSS ships for bare minimum functionality.

You really need to check this thread out. It takes 20 minutes.

Here's a quote from another site concerning the HP MSS

<quote>

Microsoft scaled the core WHS to fit nicely within 512MB, but HP added several of it's own apps. The EX470 footprint as shipped takes close to 700MB, so even if you don't add any apps of our own, the virtual memory already thrashes the drives.

PP1 Beta generated 54GB logs in first day

In the first day since installing PP1 Beta (no MSS upgrade), the logs includes 17 DEUtil Log files each over 3GB's in size. One created every hour on the hour.

This resulted in many full disk error messages and the automatic compression of log files to make space.

Moving logs files off the MSS has recovered disk space, only to see the resumption of more large GB log files being created at each hour.

The large log files are named with "DEutil".date.time."3644.log" such as DEUtil.061008.030000.3644.log

Does "3644" have any significance?

It's really NOT. With the original software load the working memory size is 700+MB. Since more than 512MB, some is virtualized onto the disk, slowing things down, generating heat and consuming power. PP1 seems to use slightly more memory.

Before you call HP try restarting the MSS. I have had the same problem a couple times both before and after installing PP1 and the restart fixed it.

It worked -- I can now get to my WHS home console. The only problem I'm having now is that I still get no indication of either addins installed or not installed in Server Addins on the home page. That is unless I log in using Remote Desktop. Then I can see the them on the home page. Not sure why this is happening. BTW I was able to delete any uninstalled addins by opening the share folders on the WHS desktop and finding the uninstalled addins in software/addins, then deleting them.

The general advice from a number of folks who ran into this is to (1) UNinstall ALL Add-Ins, (2) install PP1, (3) re-install Add-Ins. Unfortunately you are past that point. Some folks recommend a step "1a" -- move the Add-Ins out of their normal folder and then move them back as step "2a". (I did not need to do that.)

The most reliable way now it to UNinstall PP1, then do 1-3 above. I believe others have reported work-arounds avoiding that over on WindowsHomeServer.net. As I recall, these did not work for everyone. A number of folks are still struggling with this. (I am amazed PP1 got through earlier betas with this problem not being identified and fixed before now!)
