Just thought it funny (not ha ha funny; ironic funny).

What is the primary way you use your MediaSmart server?

  • To share files, photos, music, video media throughout the home.
  • To access files remotely.
  • To stream photos, music and videos to PCs, TVs and stereos in my home.
  • For automatic backup of my household PCs and laptops.
  • Share photos with remote friends and family.

Well, I guess I'd have to answer the fourth one - backups. (God, I hope it's really backing up OK)

I don't want to share anything throughout the home for fear of corrupting my files.

My office (the only place I'd really use remote access) blocks that kind of access.

I don't stream anything either (see #1).

Photo sharing is kinda awkward - the MSS / MS home page and signon process is just a mess.

So, overall, without the bug getting fixed and some fixes for web signon and other things, I have a very expensive backup system.

Well it's a Server in name, and I was looking for a Server, which isn't an option above really... What with the corruption bug. And it not supporting ICS I use mine mostly at the moment as a dust collector. It runs a backup every night but mostly I wanted a file Server and the ability to run some server class applications.

Mine is to run backups and control home automation through mControl software and a Photowebshare album. That's it!

I use my MCE2005 box for all media, including 2 v1 extenders for watching TV in other rooms, etc...

p.s., read up on what the "corruption bug" actually is and does.

My primary use is for stremaing movies to my appletvs and my xbox 360.
Closely behind, I use my MSS as a central place for ALL my documents. I know theres a bug out there, but I modify directly on the MSS with Excel, iTUnes, Word, database programs, etc.
Just to be safe though, I do a backup every week and have up to 20 versions of all my files that are kept for about a year....just in case

In priority order:

  1. Backups.
  2. Remote COMPUTER access. (When traveling I use my wife's laptop to access my own machine at home rather than using web-mail or trying to sync two mail applications.)
  3. Share and stream files at home, primarily pictures and music. I have limited this use at the moment to avoid the Data Corruption Bug (DCB).
  4. Share photos with remote friends and family. (This is limited for now due to the current idiosyncracies of the Photo WebShare application.
  5. Use as a more general server, probably replacing Photo WebShare with WHIIST or the like.
Ultimately I do want to get into video -- starting with using the MSS as a "TiVo-like" unit. Not a real hot button at the moment though.
