I'm now having a problem where backing up my main PC is failing.  The error messages are below.

The only things that have changed is that I installed the recent HP update when it was released a few days ago with PVConnect and McAfee AV Trial and defragged my hard drives on my main PC that hadn't been done in months.

I'm backing up 2 hard drives on my PC that are 152 (C:) and 149 (D:) GB.  Respectively, they have 41 and 81 GB free.  I don't have a free space problem.

I've used the WHSToolkit to reset my backup DB without success.  I've now lost all of my previous backups since Feb. 2008 when I got the MSS.

To ask me if I'm upset is an understatement.   I'm obviously looking for help.  If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

As tumbleweed passes through...I thought this was HP's official site. Where are the HP resources for help and guidance?

Evidently there is a known problem in WHS wherein a defragmentation of a client can lead to WHS not being able to read the client disk. The problem is not with the defragmentation software, rather it is with WHS. We have been told to expect a fix in PP1.

More on this is MediaSmartServer.net:

So, after spending all day with this problem, my backups are working again with no technical explanation. I've documented my test results and posted them in another related thread in the official MS WHS forums.

To avoid more cross-posting, if interested, you can follow the discussion here:

The long and short of it is that I didn't have to perform a factory reset or server recovery and it was a long and arduous process in my attempts to isolate the issue.

Due to this experience, I'm now not necessarily 100% convinced that it's related to a defrag I did on the client although it could be since I can't prove it.

I'm back in business but not sure for how long. Stay tuned...hopefully I can make it to PP1.

I read the sequence over there and certainly would NOT eliminate the possibility of a defrag problem. When you removed all those folders and started adding them back in you are restoring new "indexing" to the D-disk, rebuilding it, so to speak. Frankly, I had not thought of trying this when I had the problem, but it absolutely would have a good probability of success!

Next time I see this problem posted -- and it has been mentioned several times recently -- I will suggest either your approach. Or maybe the reverse: delete folders until it works, then replace the ones removed.

With a spare disk one might be able to move everything to another disk and them copy it all back...

Cannot believe none of us (including a couple VERY knowledgeable folks at MS) thought of those possibilities when I went through that!

Thanks for the update!

Hey JohnBick, haven't I seen you somewhere before?   Smile

Anyway, thanks for providing your input along the way.   I'm just happy that I was able to contribute in a small way.  I hope others can now save time recovering if they experience this.  I think you were also saying that it should get resolved with PP1 so this may be a short lived problem.

Thanks again.

Yes, you have -- on a board I am no longer permitted to mention over here!

By the way, I posted a reference to this (and the MS forum) over there this morning. I had not noticed it was you at the time or I would have mentioned it! I also passed it along in a couple other places and a couple PMs this morning. If it works it may be very helpful to several people.

Not so sure it will work as easily for folks with C-drive problems though! Tough to move those system files when it's running! Just now realizing though that they all seem to be having problems with their D-drives... Coincidence? Hmmmm...
