I did my first backup last night and a second today. I am unable to see any of the files that have been backed up. I am not sure if all or any of my files have made it over to the server. Mine is the admin pc so this is the first on our network. when I look at the Computer and backup tap on the Server Console it says User-PC. I'm not sure if this is a problem as I am logging on to the server with my Windows logon name which is also my user account name for the server. I am a bit confused why the User account and backup name are not the same as the user name.

Also, all my files, music, pictures etc. are listed in C:users\user. I am not sure if that can be a problem.

And I am running Vista if that could have anything to do with it.

thanks

rick

This is a confusing one. Off-hand it sounds like something is not set up correctly, the real hint being the "C:user\user". I would suggest that you re-explain this using the actual names of your client computer(s) and account(s) since there is actually a Shared Folder called "Users" -- but it would generally not be on the "C:" drive! Sub-folders of this directory might be in the form of Users\JohnBick\FinancialData, Users\JohnBick\Tools, etc. But there should ALSO be shared folders for Music, Photos, Software, Music and others you may have set up.

What users are listed on the "User Accounts" tab? On the "Computers and Backup" tab? Under "User Access" tab for Properties for one of the shared folders in the "Shared Folders" tab? Your actual client user names should show as "Login Names" under "User Accounts" and the "Names" defined there should appear in the "User Access" selection list for the "Shared Folders". The actual computer names (not user names) for these users should show in the "Computers and Backup" Name column. All this sounds more confusing than it really is.

And I would post this on http:\\MediaSmartServer.net -- I think you may reach a larger and more responsive audience there since no one else is responding here. (I check in there far more often than I do here.)

Good luck! (And welcome to the ranks of MSS users! Once we get this straightened out I think you'll be a happy camper!)

You will not see the files directly on the server through any of the shares. They will only been seen when you log into the console and choose the backup you want to restore. You will then get the option to choose the files you want to restore, where you will then see your files in the backup.

Agreed. But even if one were to RDP into the MSS and look at the C: drive there would not normally be any C:\Users\_____ directory. Nor would there be any D:\users\_____ directory. Something not making sense in the description here.

I do see the backup listed. But why wouldn't I be able to see the files in the folders. Is the server only good for backups. I was under the impression, and since there are folders available to look at, that I would be able to see what is on the server. Why would there be folders if I can't look at what is in those folders.

Maybe I am missing something in how the server works. Is there also a way to enter information on the server by copy and paste that wouldn't be part of a backup and is this what would be available to view.

rickc:

The backups are stored in thier own area of the server that is not visible (they are in a compressed file) from any of the shares (Users, Music, Photos and Videos) or via Remote Desktop. You can only see the files that are backed up through the Restore option in the console. You can store files on the shares that would then be available to all users (as long as they have permissions that allow them access).

JohnBick:

I believe he's refering to his local drive setup (C:\users\users).

I think I am beginning to understand. Backups are different than the actual shared files. So, being dumb I will ask. How do I get files into the shared files on the server.

When you install the connector software on the client, it should create a shortcut on your desktop to the shares on the server. Or you can just navigate through the network to the server and see the shares and map a drive letter to them.

Thanks for the help. It finally makes sense. My wife laughed at me since she told me about the backup but I didn't listen to her.

Anyway, i did try to map the drive but was only able to map it to one of the shared folders so I deleted it. What i realized is that I can save to the shared files on the server even though I can't see them on my directory.

The only puzzling thing is that when I tried mapping it would only work for one shared folder. I wasn't able to map to just the drive. A minor problem I guess.
