There is nothing in place on the MSS to automate the process of backing up from a Mac, sadly.
Personally, I use Chronosync (http://www.econtechnologies.com/site/Pages/ChronoSync/chrono_overview.html) to sync a Mac that I have on my local network. It is pretty similar to SyncBack, a great piece of software for Windows. Once I paid the $30 and got the sync setup, it works well. I chose some software that syncs vs creates a backup so all the files could be accessed externally.
One problem I have is that there are 5 or 6 files that continue to get synced that have over 260 characters in their names, which causes MSS to alert me that duplication is failing. I am trying to filter those out, but besides that, works pretty well!

I have a heterogeneous computing environment at home and am still unclear at how the MediaSmart Server ecosystem accommodates both PCs and Macs. Would make the decision to go with MSS easier if I knew more about the benefits for my situation. Who has explored this already and can share some insights?
Two books Microsoft Windows Home Server Unleashed by Paul McFedries and Windows Home Server Bible by Greg Kettell / Jennifer Ackerman Kettell have articles devoted to using MAC equipment with the Windows Home Server.
Do a google on WHS MAC or WHS APPLE and several links show up. Here's a link from Home Server Hacks too:

First of all, meerkat, thanks for showing me this application. I consider myself an Apple fan, and I actually didn't know about this program. I'm currently using Time Machine to back up my Mac to an external hard drive - I like backing up the whole thing, in lieu of a more robust setup, but that may change in the future...
So basically, you're saying that a Mac can read the MSS hard drive, which is good. Can it "see" the whole drive? Or do you have to partition off a specific area? Or, can it only read certain folders?
And... if you can partition off a portion of the drive, you could use Time Machine, no? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
