My most needed addin is WHS Disk Management as it tells me what is going on in the machine and what disks I am working with. The stock Storage management is wothless and the new Disk Labeler add-in doesn't work with my set up. I have 1 500G drive as the system drive and 3 WD GP 1T drives in the system and a port multiplier with 4 500G drives. Disk labeler thinks I have only the one drive in the MSS and everything else is labelled as external. Looks like more testing was needed for disk labeler.
Categories: Home Server Add-Ins
There's a lot of add-ins available for the MediaSmart Server, that do a myriad of things to make your life easier and more fun.
Out of the add-ins that are out there, I'm sure you may have found a need that hasn't been addressed yet.
What is your "most wanted" add-in, and why? Let's hear some creative ideas!

Hi erail,
Drop me a private message with a screenshot and let me take a look at what's going on with the labeller. What port multiplier are you using? I have a similar setup that I tested with and it worked ok, so I'll see what I can do to fix this for your setup.
Thanks!

erail,
I just posted an update to fix the problem you saw -- download the new version and you should have no problem with the external drive bays now!

Jerry,
Sorry, went out of town and just got back. I'll download the fix, but it looks like you got it right this time. Thanks.

Jerry,
Looks good with my setup. CFI portmultiplier shows 4 external drives which are 500G seagates and the Server shows 4 Drives internal. I did here someone who have 4 drives in the mediasmart but only 3 in the pool, the 4th drive showed as external so you may want to check that.

I would like a proxy/internet filter that I could run other computers in my house through to ensure nothing inappropriate gets through.
There are lots of plugins you can add to a browser but having a central server to manage all this would be very usefull.

I am currently working on a tutorial to tackle the proxy issues. I am also thinking about showing you how to create a wap proxy so you don't have to pay Verizon anymore for internet usage on your Cell phone!
I only have to figure out which software I would like to use... I am torn between two, so... unfortunately, it won't be done tonight.
Same bat time, same bat channel (ha... inside joke that one forum member will get!)

I think one of the best addins (outside of the tutorials I have already written) would be a printer configuration and association button in the console. The button would allow you to configure a printer and have the client on the pc automatically add the printer to the client machines printers.
That would be NICE!!

WHS Outlook would be the next best thing I suppose...

I think some sort of VPN add-in would be really nice. Actually, I think it would be great if the next releease of WHS had something integrated. It would be great if the connector software could detect when you are outside your home network and prompt you to connect (perhaps with an autoconnect option). Once connected shares and backups could work seamlessly from remote locations. VPN is simple in principle, but quite complicated to manually setup for the average user.
I know - and I've tried Hamachi. It works fine. PPTP on the server can also be done. And there's OpenVPN. But I think an add-in or integrated feature would be more appealing to the masses (no need to RDP to the server). Also, Hamachi connects you to your server, but does not connect you to your whole network (unless you install Hamachi on every client). A simple to use, simple to setup feature for bringing a remote WHS client to the home network seems like it could have great appeal.
