I have had 4 500G seagates in the Mediasmart and they ran well but I switch 3 of the seagates out for 3 WD 1TB GREEN WD10EACS and they are much quieter than the seagates and run around 4-5 degrees C cooler with no perceptible loss in performance. I really like the Western Digital Green Power drives. I left the system drive as a 500G seagate because I see no reason to waste a terabyte drive since it's just a transfer drive and 500G is big enough for me

For those out there who have added additional storage to the expansion bays in thier home server, share which drives you think offer the best performance with the least amount of noise.
I'm also using a WD Green Power drive, the 750GB version. Very quite and cool running.
I purchased a HD 1T|ST 7K 32M SATA2 ST31000340AS from newegg.com; works fine, seems fast, not too loud (although noise level is not an issue for me because of where I have the server located).
I'm using eleven 750GB WD green drives with my MSS. They are very quiet and run cool.
8TB MSS(11 WD 750GB GP drives), CFI port Multiplier, 4 bay USB, 2GB, LE-1640
Like ERAIL I recommend the 1TB GREEN WD10EACS drives. They are much quieter than the Seagate drives and run around 7-10 degrees C cooler. I see no performance difference in a 100MB LAN and doubt there would be any with a 1GB LAN. I, too, left the system drive as the MSS 500GB Seagate because I see no reason to waste a TB drive since it is effectively justa temporary transfer point.
Since I have an EX475 my drives are currently 500-500-1000 but the next time I do a factory reset I expect to change that to 500-1000-500 to get a better utilization. Eventually it will be 500-1000-1000-1000.

I have 4 Seagate 7200.11 in the drive pool and 4 1 TB Western Digital GP drives as backup.
I bought the GP drives after I filled the 4 bays of the MSS. I tried using one GP drive in the drive pool with the seagates but it went crazy...so I use the GP for backup only
