Hi,

I'm hoping someone can provide guidance.  I recently changed my IP address on the MediaSmart WHS.  So, now what happens is that WHS Web Logs shows me the local network ip's even though the checkbox is checked to hide them.  I tried uninstalling Web Logs and reinstalling and no success.... any thoughts/idea?

Thanks.

Taylor,

What is the local IP of your MSS box? Is it 192.168.something.something?

Hi there... my local IP is in the 172.16.0.x network. Any ideas/thoughts?

Is 172.16 a valid private LAN? I thought it should be 192.168.x.y, and that's what I check for. I will look into this.

Taylor,

You're right, 172.16 is a valid private subnet, I never knew that before. I looked into the code tonight and I see where the issue is, but I'm not yet sure how to fix it.

I will keep thinking about it and get it fixed soon I hope.

For now, it only thinks that 192.168.x.y is a "local" subnet...

I also use 172.16.x.x for my LAN and have this same problem.

10.X.X.X are also private addresses. http://www.idevelopment.info/data/Networking/Networking_Basics/BASICS_Private... has a nice table that lists the private address spaces.

Private addresses:
10.x.x.x
192.168.x.x
172.16.x.x - 172.31.x.x

To only hide local subnet addresses, you should do a lookup for the local IP and subnet mask information and use a formula to determine the IP range that should be hidden. This should be done for each network interface for systems that are multi-homed.

If you are going to hide all private addresses (not recommended), you should rename the option from 'Hide Local Network?' to 'Hide All Private Addresses?'.

Jagster:

I finally have some time to fix this this week I hope! Between having a kid and work I've been too busy to work on this. I think your idea with the netmask is better than doing a simple check on those IP ranges.

I fully understand. I have a couple small ones myself and they definately do not leave me a whole lot of free time. I'm sure we all appreciate your efforts, especially us non-programmers that can't do it ourselves.
