I installed the AutoExit OK, but can't get it to work correctly.  It looks like in the menu that the "Shutdown", "Sleep", "Hibernate" etc buttons are grayed out (not sure if that's on purpose or not).  I can click on them, but when I do, I get the message "An Error Occurred, ErrorCode:998".

Do I need something installed to enable remote management of my machines, or is it enough that I just have the MSS console running on each machine?  It would be helpful if there were instructions to go along with this add-in if indeed there are other steps that need to be done to get this to work (for us non-networking gurus :-).  Thanks in advance!

Hi Ron,

Did you install the client software on each client?
You can get it at: \\server\software\aecltstp.exe, there is also a guideline in that directory with a whole description on how to install, configure, problems,...

For the next build this problem of not finding the client software/guideline will be solved. This is a remark that comes up occasionally so I will have this improved.
Changes for the next build:
- First of all the document will be in pdf instead of xps.
- When first installed, you will get a notification on where the client + guideline is at.
- The files will have a more clear name and will be in a subdirectory of software.

Please mail me the results to r2beta@asoft-ware.com, then it's easier to follow up.

Cheers,
Nick

I've also experienced the ErrorCode:998 problem, however it only happens with one of the three PCs I am managing with my Home Server. I have two WinXP Pro machines, and one Vista Ultimate x64 PC. One of the WinXP machines is a laptop, the other a desktop. Auto Exit works fine on the laptop and the Vista PC, but when I try to use features such as "Shut Down", "Reboot", "Sleep", "Hibernate", "Log OFf", or "Lock Workstation" I get the ErrorCode:998 problem. Features such as "Wake on LAN", "Remote Desktop", and "Send Message" work fine.

The client software is installed on all three machines. The only machine that gives me trouble is the WinXP Pro desktop, and only with the features listed. Any ideas on what it might be?

Hi!

I have investigated this problem a bit already and I'm currently working on a next build which will hopefully give more details on what is causing this.
I will contact you in private so that we can discuss more specifics and if I find out more about it I will reply to this post so that other people that are following this thread will also be informed.

A small update...

I've been investigating some more for his issue and the first indications seem to indicate that it is caused by 'something' that is blocking the communication between the client and the server.
It is not the Windows Firewall, turning it off doesn't fix it.

If you have ideas, send them along so that I can try them out.

Any progress on this error? I have a computer that was working perfectly when I used the trial of WHS. After upgrading to the licensed version, I had to reinstall the AutoExit client on each of my computers. For two of them, everything worked exactly as it did before. On the third computer, I can't do anything with AutoExit (send messages, start it, shut it down, anything).

I have tired removing and reinstalling AE several times and have gone through the registry with a fine tooth comb to get rid of all traces of it before rebooting then reinstalling, but I always get this same error. And yes, I am installing it from the software\AutoExit share that is created on the server when AE is installed on WHS.

As far as I know, nothing has changed on the client between the WHS trial and the reinstallation of the licensed version of WHS. I have checked the firewall and AE is being allowed through (two entries are listed, on for AE and on for the AE client).

I'm stuck and can't find anything online to point me to a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Clint,

Atm I haven't gotten any feedback or reports from users with respect to the problem with the communication between client and server.
However Error 998 can have other causes, so now that you have a scenario to reproduce please follow these instructions:
- Open the WHS Console and go to the AutoExit tab.
- Click on the 'Settings' button and check ON the checkbox 'Logging (only enable when supports ask you)'. If it's already on, leave it.
- Now reproduce your problem until you get the 998 error.
- Browse to the folder 'c:\Temp' on your WHS and send me all the files that start with 'ae' as filename.

I can then try to figure out what is going wrong.

Thanks,
Nick

Nick,

I sent you a PM with the contents of the log file with a 998 error generated when issuing a shutdown command to the problem computer. One thing I did find that DOES work is WOL. That surprised me a bit, as everything else either generates the 998 error, (the rest of the commands) or does nothing at all (send message). All of which was working on this system on the trial version of WHS.

Thanks again,

Clint

Sorry for the thread necromancy.
I'm getting the ErrorCode:998 as well when I attempt to shut down, sleep, Lock or reboot the workstation. I'm also having problems using Wake On Lan. I don't get an error message, but the workstation doesn't turn on either. I am able to Remote Desktop, but sending a message doesn't go through. It doesn't give an error though.
On another machine that I'm trying to control, it won't shut the machine down, or log it off.
I've got a log file that I can send you. It's too large to reproduce in this thread though.

Hi Manderso,

Do you have AutoExit 2008R2 or the beta of 2009 installed?
Regarding the 998 error, this should be fixed in AutoExit 2009.
AutoExit 2009 is currently in beta testing, have a look here: http://www.asoft.be/
So first try with that version.

Regarding WOL, that's a difficult one. Did you read the guideline pdf that is located in the Software folder on the shares? \\server\software\autoexit

Regarding the shut down, please send me the log at support@asoft-ware.com.
Is the client installed on that system?

Cheers,
Nick
