Windows Home Server Team Announces Power Pack 3 Beta for Windows Home Server

Thought Power Pack 2 was the end of the road for this version of Windows Home Server? Think again! The Windows Home Server Team has announced Power Pack 3 Beta for Windows Home Server, which "improves the Windows Home Server experience with Windows 7 and Windows Media Center" thanks to some new features and enhancements.

The list is long, but there's plenty of goodness coming for Windows 7 users like enhanced backup and recovery, as well as integration with Windows 7 Libraries. Windows Search 4 has been included with Power Pack 3 Beta to improve query search times, indexing times and reliability, while netbook owners with low screen resolutions will enjoy better compatibility with the Home Server Console.

The Media Center integration added in Power Pack 2 has also been enhanced. New for Windows Media Center is a TV archiving function to automatically archive recordings on the home server, and the new "Console Quick View" allows users to see statistics and information about the home server through Windows Media Center and Extenders.

It's no surprise that the home server team is looking to release PP3 along side Windows 7 on October 22nd, but of course, there are no guarantees.

Raymond said: The idea behind the media smart server. I think was suppose to be able to sream movies pictures and video over your home network. I do not understand why you cant play your home movies that you have burned to dvd then copyied onto your server for safe keeping. why can you play movies directly from you hp laptop but not directly from the sever.

You can, and depending on the kind of network media player you have, you don't even need to do anything. For media players that don't support mounting disc images, the HP Video Converter (currently in the EX48x and EX49x MediaSmart Servers) can convert your home movie DVDs into a streaming friendly format for you. In fact, we have an entire article dedicated to that very topic, which explains how to do it on the EX48x servers running the 2.5 update: http://www.mediasmarthome.com/article/12236/Converting-and-Streaming-Home-Mov...

And, we're working on an updated version of this article for the EX49x series of MediaSmart Servers.
