Power Up Your Home Server - 12-10 - 12-16

The HP MediaSmart Server, on it's own, performs many wonderful functions that makes it easy to backup, share, and access your personal data and media. However, the flexibility and features available to the Home server owner don't necessarily stop there.

The HP MediaSmart Server is based on Microsoft's Windows Home Server Operating System, which has been specially created for products like the HP MediaSmart Server. Since it's a real Windows OS under the hood, you can customize and enhance your Home Server with new features and abilities using something called "Add-Ins."

Add-Ins are specially created programs for Windows Home Server made by anyone with a vision and some programming experience. Many are even given out free by add-in authors. To install an add-in, simply download the add-in file, move it to the Add-Ins folder in the shared Software folder, then visit the admin console. You'll see your add-in ready to be installed in the Add-Ins area of the settings menu.

Add-Ins can can be anything, and can let you use your Home Server in ways never thought possible. With this kind of flexibility, you can can continually expand the usefullness of your HP MediaSmart Server for years to come.

I currently have 26 add-ins installed on my server (Sounds crazy, doesn't it?). The majority revolve around system maintenance and administration (Diskeeper, Avast! anti-virus, Advanced Admin Console, etc...). I have a few media management add-ins and also a couple of web management addins, as well. But a favorite, well that is a difficult question.

I love WHS Disk Management and couldn't imagine trying to keep track of my disk usage without it.

I can't say enough good things about Avast! anti-virus. It is simply a great light weight antivirus program that does not drag my systems into the ground like some of the big names in the anti-virus sector. You can't beat the price ($80 for the server and 10 Pc's). Administration and license deployment is a snap using the add-in. Simply great software.

Digital ArcHound works and works well. It is a decent document management solution.

I am now starting to pay more attention to media management. I am currently running RipNAS Essentials and I am considering MyMovies on the server.

I haven't used Add-In's yet, but I like the sound of the Sage TV place-shifting add-in. The software sounds like it gives you similar media accessibility features that a standalone placeshifter, like a Slingbox, provides. Very slick.

I'm new to WHS. I took a look around the add-ins and saw a number of them that appear to be really useful. Can't wait to try them out!!

Well, I have 17 Add-Ins installed and feel this ability is key to my acceptance of Windows Home Server (WHS) and the HP MediaSmart Server (MSS). But to list a favorite? That's a tough challenge!

Since my primary use of the MSS is to provide backups I guess that Backup Database Backup has to be at the top with MSS Fan Control right in there to keep the MSS temperatures down.

Disk Management is visited frequently to monitor the usage and health of my disk drives. (But even that is infrequent as I have gained faith in a stable system!)

I share some photos with Whiist. While I generally don't list that as my top Add-In, I do know that folks in my family and a couple groups I work with would undoubtedly list that at the top for me as they find it provides easy access to photos.

I have added WebCam to my home security "suite" and, as that runs on the desktop, I find the Advanced Admin Console valuable for accessing it to adjust settings. Program Launcher is a new addition that appears to be an alternative way to do the same thing.

F-Secure, PerfectDisk, Remote Notification, Grid Junction, Remote Alert all just sit there doing their thing in an invisible way. They only make the top of the list when they are needed -- but with the stability of the MSS that's not very often!

Event Viewer, WHS Toolkit, MSS Drive Labeler, DupeCleaner, Duplication Info, Tab Reorder, WHS IO Monitor, & Program Launcher round out my current list, all sitting there ready to be used if needed.

While I do share music and photos on my home LAN, I do not use iTunes, PVConnect or any other software to enhance this experience (yet).

But that is dodging the question. My vote is for the Backup Database Backup Add-In as it (1) allows automatic duplication of the backup database and (2) gives me a very easy way to move backups of multiple clients off-site.

I have a few Add-Ins installed but find the Remote Notification Add-In to be a must have. I have it setup to send me an alert via a text message to my cell phone. So if anything goes awry I know immediately.

I have not tried an add in yet, but love the uTorent idea. This one is pretty cool and I would love it.

I'm still trying to get all the computers at our house successfully backed up. Once that's done, I'll explore the add-ins. Once things are stable (if!),
I'll consider the advanced admin console.

We're behind the router NAT firewall, and each individual computer has an antivirus, so I'm feeling that the server itself probably does not need its own antivirus (after all, it's just backing up the home PC's, and possibly sharing photos...). I'm not looking for much advanced functionality from the home server. Just reliable backups, and possibly shared photos/home videos.

December 11, 2008 2:32 PM

If I had the MediaSmart Server, I would get the Advanced Admin Console and the Grid Junction.

December 11, 2008 3:41 PM

WHS Outlook solves the issue of trying to keep a consistent view of your mail across systems and locations.

December 11, 2008 4:29 PM

The primary addin i currently use is program launcher, so I can launch programs that otherwise don't integrate with the WHS console. I also use my WHS for running MagicJack, which gives me a local phone number and standard phone jack for $20/year.

December 12, 2008 2:24 PM

I use SyncToy 2.0 quite a bit, which is not technically an add-on but the way it integrates with the MediaSmart server is fantastic. It does a great job syncing files and folders that I want to be able to access at any time. I love HP MediaSmart Server, now I just need one for my home...

December 12, 2008 3:46 PM

I'd like to see an easy to configure otpion for pulling data from other networked computers. Specificailly I am ripping DVDs (with another box) and need to move the resulting 5+GB files to the mecdia vault. Even with a gigbait net this is a couple of minutes. I'd like to schedule a proces to happen at night to move these big fiels around when it won't bog down the network or my computers.

Sadly, I only have a MV1 so the Windows add-ins dn't help me. There are some available for Linux and I could program my own, but who has time for everything...

Sounds like the Advanced Admin Console would solve the problem we have by consolidating access to our resources.
Alas, we are not fortunate enough to own the HP MediaSmart Server . . . yet.

December 13, 2008 10:14 AM

The add ins I would find useful are the Sage TV for WHS and Media Connect Controller and Advanced Admin Console

December 13, 2008 6:15 PM

I don't own the HP MediaSmart Server, but the Sage TV for WHS looks very interesting. Thank you!

December 13, 2008 9:38 PM

I don't have a server or an add-in. If I did have a server, I would add-in the Sage TV for WHS.

December 13, 2008 10:08 PM

I'd love to have an add-in that blocks ads and scripts.

December 13, 2008 10:53 PM

the Advanced Admin Console and the Grid Junction

December 14, 2008 12:06 AM

The TV Manager app looks interesting, sending emails to notify of newly recorded shows. Sounds useful.

December 14, 2008 1:01 AM

I like the Disk Management add in also. Lets me see which external drives are plugged in an running, the size, size used, free space. I use the external drives for backups of my client pc backup database.

December 14, 2008 8:11 AM

If I had a server I think the Disk Management would interest me.

December 14, 2008 11:00 AM

I do have multiple PC's and laptops in the house, and definitely need a
Home Server. Some of the add-ons look interesting to try. Especially Disk Management and Media Management.

December 14, 2008 6:28 PM

I agree with Fishingolf, could use a server to access media through out the house, I think anything to stream music or movies would be used. I am also curious if there is one to access the server form the web to either stream music or access files while on the road?

December 14, 2008 11:14 PM

I haven't tried WHS yet. I'd like a plugin that makes it easy to backup/restore from offsite storage (S3, etc.).

December 15, 2008 12:04 AM

WebGuide and TVManager are the key Add-ins for me.

Managing media and expanding the MSSs media capabilites are essential to me.
