Hands-On: Lian Li Mini-Q PC-Q11 Aluminum Mini Tower PC Case Review

Following our recent review of the Lian-Li PC-Q08 PC case, we came across yet another Lian Li chassis that is well suited for HTPC and Windows Home Server projects.

The new Aluminum Mini Tower PC case is called the PC-Q11 and is available in four colors, including black, silver, red, and piano white. The case is made from 1.5mm thick aluminum sheets and measures 200 x 326 x 260 mm, with a weight of only 2.42kg. It is designed for silent operation and can fit Mini-ITX and Mini-DTX mainboards inside and a removable HDD cage.  Although, the chassis is small it uses normal ATX PS/2 power supply. The cooling solution for the case is a single 140mm fan and there are vent holes for CPU cooling located on the rear panel. Please stayed tuned for pricing and availability.

Intel Processor Performance Upgrade Pilot

Reports are in that Intel is testing the US market’s acceptance of $50 upgrade cards which will unlock faster processor speeds and other enhancements on supporting PCs.

It is normal for Intel to sell their microchips and processors set to specific features and speeds, however, now the company is offering consumers an upgrade to remove limitations. Gateway’s SX2841-09e model will be the first in the USA to get this trial run started, although any PC that has the Pentium G6951 processor should be upgradable. Customers purchasing the upgrade from retailers such as Best Buy get Hyper-threading enabled as well as the L3 cache increasing by 1MB to 4MB. According to Hardware.info this takes the chip’s performance to somewhere near a Core i3 520.

Hands-On: Icy Dock MB561US-4S-1 Quad-Bay eSATA/USB External Enclosure Review

With the introduction of the eSATA interface we can now easily expand existing internal storage with external storage using minimal effort and with blazing performance. We have seen quite a few eSATA enclosures lately and today we will be taking a look at what the ICY DOCK MB561US-4S-1 Quad Bay External Enclosure has to offer.

As large capacity hard drives have become more and more affordable the need to store more content (digital photos, music, and videos) has drastically increased, people find themselves out of storage space at alarmingly fast rates. Our demand for large storage is growing and growing. This is most evident at the local electronic retailer where NAS and external storage solutions are plentiful.

Most OEM Windows Home Server feature four-internal hard drive bays, but if you are an avid photographer or a music lover you will soon find that you are getting close to capacity. In that case, one option would be to expand the storage of your Home Server with a reliable and high performance external eSATA storage enclosure. ICY DOCK is one manufacturer that can be of service for your storage needs, in particularly, their MB561US-4S-1 Quad Bay Storage Enclosure.

Developers: Pinpoint Your Add-in, Company and Professional Services

If you never heard of Microsoft Pinpoint, you’re not alone. Apparently it is a catalog of thousands of applications for Windows, submitted by their developers.

Don’t be fooled, this is not a App store, but instead a Microsoft owned list of applications for Windows platforms including the WHS. This list and will help developers promote their add-ins and services. Now, Microsoft will be switching  their existing Windows Home Server v1 add-in page over to the Pinpoint and are asking for developers to submit their add-ins to help build up the catalogue.

Having an add-in catalog is not a new concept and here at HomeServerLand we work hard to keep everyone up to date and always encourage developers to tell us about their add-ins and services. On that topic, shhhh, a new version of Add-in Central is nearing completion!

Here's what Microsoft had to say about their switch to Pinpoint:
