Using Mac's Time Machine with HP MediaSmart Server EX470/475 (Page 3 of 3)

Step 3: Relocate Your Manual Backup to the MediaSmart Server

Finally, we're all done with the Terminal... go ahead and close it down.  Now, we'll need to create a directory on the MSS where you would like the backup to be located.

Using Your HP MediaSmart Server EX470 or EX475 With Mac's Time Machine

I have created a separate share which I called "TMBackup," but for purposes here I've copied it to the "Public" folder of the HP server.  I have given my user on the Mac full access to this share  Of course, you can call your location anything you'd like.  All you need to do at this point is copy the Sparse Bundle file you created in Step 2 over to your new location; this can be done in the Finder with a simple drag and drop.  The file will be located in your Home directory.

Note that the Sparse Bundle is much smaller than your specified size; don't worry!  You only set the Maximum size for the file, and since there is no backup contained within it at this time, it's currently very small.

Step 4: Enable Time Machine

Last step is to enable Time Machine. Open the System Preferences and select "Time Machine."  Change the Volume to the SMB drive you just have connected to.  You should see your newly created MSS Time Machine drive as one of the available options.

If you have it set to back up automatically, your first backup will start shortly and most likely take quite a long time. Now's a great chance for you to sit back, relax, and watch as you back up and protect your data on your MediaSmart Server!

Works great unless the first drive in your storage pool has less free space than the required amount for Time Machine to perform the initial backup. This is because Time Machine queries the amount of free space left on the network share drive, and WHS reports the amount of free space left on the first drive in the pool (the system drive) rather than the amount of free space left in the storage pool.

I wonder if/how HP worked around this problem for the new line of MediaSmart servers?

This should help people get around the problem of their system drive being too small:

Backing up is one thing, restoring is another. I recently lost my iMac HD and had to restore from a Time Machine back-up on my external USB Drive. Could I have done this over the network? I am not sure this would work b/c of my drive failure and my restore did not load WiFi/network drivers. I would have had no access to my MediaSmart Server over the network. Similar to the HP restore for Windows, the app for Mac probably helps with this issue. I really wish HP would give legacy EX47x customers the updated software.

Comments? Am I missing something?

I followed the tutorial but time machine refuses to mount my backup file. I will try tocreat another but I know I have plent of space (TM is reporting 1.5TB free).

It works fantastic!.
Thanks so much. I guess now I don't need to upgrade my WHS or wait for the HP to release an update to be able to backup my Mac on a EX470 home server.
Thanks again.

Thanks for a very clear tutorial.

I followed the instructions and all seemed well until Time Machine attempted the first back up. I get an error message that says TIME MACHINE ERROR. THE BACKUP DISK IMAGE COULD NOT BE CREATED.

I see the sparsebundle file in the directory I am pointing to but it won't work. Any suggestions on what I have configured wrong?

If no ideas, can you provide the instructions to undo this set up?

Thanks

I get an error creating the sparcebundle and it will not let me create a file larger than the free amount of HDD space on my mac i have a 160gb HD and get an error when i try to create any size larger than 30gb which is how much free space i have. Does not seem to be the same as the steps above.

Anyone know what i might be doing wrong?

Any word on when HP might release an update for the original Home Server models? I'd kind of expected it by now (which proves I'm a bit naive heh).

Hi, I have been spending last couple of nights trying to solve this TIME MACHINE ERROR. THE BACKUP DISK IMAGE COULD NOT BE CREATED.error

The solution eventually discovered is to ensure that your computer name in sharing tab in preferences corresponds to your local host name AND CRITICALLY that it is less than 8 characters, has no spaces or special characters at all. so lower case consecutive basic characters only.

Hope this helps somebody

SPW - Thank you for addressing my question. I appreciate you taking the time.

I checked my bonjour name and sure enough it had dashes in it and it was over 20 characters long. I did as you suggested and it changed the message, but I now get a message that reads:

TIME MACHINE ERROR. THE BACKUP IMAGE DISK COULD NOT BE MOUNTED.

Any other thoughts??

Thanks again for your time.

I am no expert in these things and to be honest, tend to rush at things a bit. 2 other mistakes that I had thus made were to accidently include in the command line creating the sparse bundle, the .local after the computer name (need just the computer name) and also included the separators in the mac address which need to be removed.
Additional easy errors are that spaces creep in to the command that creates the sparse bundle if copying in address and to make 100% sure that you have the required access rights to the HMS drive (assume you get explicit errors if you don't)
Not saying you made my stupid mistakes though.

Lastly, the point made in an earlier post about the available space on the first available hard disk in your HMS I assume is still valid. I have exluded some external hard disks from the back up to reduce the back up size (to just the internal HD) to allow me to do this. I assume that if I add them back in that things will break down again! I know I have about 180G available on the first HMS disk and am backing up an 160gb internal HD on my Mac.
In summary, you need to make sure that the max sparse bundle size you create is smaller than total space avialable on the first available hard disk on HMS.

I have a 250G hard drive in the iMac. I had set up the sparsebundle as a 300g file. When I deleted everything and started again, I set it up as a 250G file. This time the disk was created and then mounted fine on the first go. It is backing up on my HMS right now.

Thanks for all your help.

Has anybody determined if running a drive balancer resolves the available drive space issue?

Read the following link coming straight from Hp. Yes you CAN use time machine in Hp MHS without much trouble.

An update, I was able to use the time machine only for one day. After that I got the error: TIME MACHINE ERROR. THE BACKUP IMAGE DISK COULD NOT BE MOUNTED.

I spent several hours and nights. Finally I decided to upgrade my server with the latest one.

Now I own a EX487 and the Time Machine works without problems. Although this is most important improvement I see coming from a EX470 with 2GB ram and 1TB of hard drive capacity.

I've just finally got this to work. The instructions were great the only part its taking me a day to realize is its not only the computer name you have to make sure is less than 8 characters. Another crucial thing to remember is take the colons (:) out of the mac address.
e.g don't do comp1_00:mc:ad:re:ss:is do this comp1_00mcadressis

I'm using a SmartMedia Server 475. I've tried to follow the instructions however time machine will not run...it gets the error "Backup Disk Image cannot be mounted". The macs local host (bonjour) names is less than 8 characters. The share name it is connecting to is less than 8 characters. I believe I created the sparsebundle file correctly and copied it to the share. However, I cannot see the file from the mac with Finder after the file is copied. When I configure Time Machine to use the share for the backup I am prompted for credentials. I used an account with administrative rights on the server. I also have enough free disk space (675GB) the sparsebundle file was created for 300GB. NOTE: That is larger than the disk drive on the mac. Any ideas?

This process described in the howto works. I kept getting the TIME MACHINE ERROR. THE BACKUP IMAGE DISK COULD NOT BE MOUNTED error.

The problem I had was that my iMac is wirelessly connected to my network but the initial hdiutil command wants the seems to want the Ethernet MAC Address not the Wireless MAC Address.

Once I rebuilt the hdiutil command with the ethernet MAC Address the Time capsule was able to start backing up my iMac to my EX470.

Has anyone successfully done a system restore from this sort of backup? Any special tricks needed? Successfully set this up on a normal Windows machine (not Home Server), works great.
