Will this new web interface be available for the 1st generation home servers?
Using The HP MediaSmart Server EX485/487 To Access Your Media Remotely (Page 5 of 5)
Categories: Networking and Remote Access
Troubleshooting
That's all fine and dandy, you say, but it's not working. Maybe you're sitting there waiting forever for the page to load, or had problems with your router. Here's some tips to help get your connection up and running.
- Make sure you have Flash installed in your browser, as it's necessary for the player to run.
- If you're attempting remote access from a very slow Internet connection, you're bound to have problems - try it from a faster connection first.
- Check to see that your router configured itself correctly. If not, attempt the autoconfiguration again.
- If the autoconfiguration fails, re-visit your port settings, and ensure the ports listed are opened properly on your router. This is the most common source of remote access problems.
- If you're convinced your router is set up properly, reboot the router to ensure its settings are saved and refreshed.
- You could try rebooting your MediaSmart Server as well, just for good measure. While you're at it, double check that you followed all the steps above.
- If all of this fails, a more drastic measure would be to purchase a router that is supported by Microsoft for use with the Windows Home Server and has uPnP capabilities.

Ok - so I have a question. I do not yet own a MediaSmart server (still doing the research) but am close to buying. In reading the reviews of the newer EX48x series, one of the complaints mentioned (both on this site and others) is the removal of the Photo Sharing capability. As I understood from the articles, they removed the ability to lock down the photo site with a username/password. I require a username/password for my site and that is really a deal killer for me with the HP (I would end up using something like Gallery). However, if I am reading this article correctly, this provides a work around for that? Is this a 'safe' method for providing access to your media over the internet - specifically photos? Since I do not have a MediaSmart as of yet, I am unable to play around. Any more specifics would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This would only work for those who have an account on the home server. The difference between the photo streaming in this app vs. the Photo Webshare app was that you could set up visitor accounts for any number of users to provide access to photos. These visitor accounts in photo webshare differ greatly from user accounts on your home server.
I suppose you could create one "family" and one "friends" account that you share out, but you'll pretty much give them free reign on your home server, and not just limit them to photos. Probably not the greatest idea.
If you only care about you or your immediate family, then this will work okay.
Matt,
Can you elaborate about the photo feature? It is my understanding that before you could have an unlimited amount of people view your pictures but now your limited to the 10 mediaserver accounts right? I just bought the ex485 which I will get today and was wondering about this. Also, is it possible to put a large video file (500 MB- 2GB) on the server and have someone remotely access it and download it to their computer? Thank you in advance for any help!

Photo Webshare had it's own section to allow visitor access, but it wasn't a full MediaSmart Server account. Most importantly, don't confuse the Photo Webshare feature on the original MediaSmart Server with the Photo Publisher feature on the new models. It's not the same thing.
As for your second question, sure, but they would need a full MSS account to remotely access data on the home server. If you're looking to distribute a file to many people, there are ways you can hack the MSS to serve as an FTP or web share, which would be more ideal for those purposes.

I also want to know if the new web interface be available for the 1st generation home servers?
I just tried this for the first time, but the Flash interface could not seem to handle the amount of music that I have on my MediaSmart server (only about 13000 songs). After waiting a while, I got the artist list, but it would never populate the album/song lists after clicking an artist.
If I browse by directory, I get directory names, but never the contents of the directories to start playing songs.
Any ideas?
Did anyone find out yet if first-gen HP MediaSmart Server owners will get this new capability?
I also am having an issue with getting the streaming app to catalog all of my music. My folders will populate, but not the artists. Also, it appears that I can stream music an photos, but not video, is that right? Is there a way to get it to stream video remotely? This isn't a deal breaker for me, just wondering if it is an option. Mostly I'm concerned with getting the streaming app to properly catalog all of my music.
