Using The HP MediaSmart Server EX485/487 To Access Your Media Remotely (Page 3 of 5)

Step 3: Set Up A Dynamic Domain Name Service
You've probably been wondering this whole time... "How do I actually get to my server over the Internet? I just don't type in a website do I?" Actually, you do - and the MediaSmart server makes it pretty easy to do so.
You've got a couple of options. First, you can get "premium" dynamic domain name service with TZO.com (see the community guide on using TZO.) For the purposes of this tutorial, we're going to do it using your Windows Live ID - a free solution.

To get started, click on the "Setup" button under the Domain Name section.

The menu you see above is where you select the type of domain you will be setting up - choose the Windows Live Custom Domains option.

Type in the name you would like your domain to have. This is what you'll type in your Internet browser to access your MediaSmart Server remotely, i.e., "https://pete.homeserver.com"

The setup program will not automagically configure your server's dynamic address. In reality, it's doing a lot of stuff behind the scenes to make sure that you'll always be able to access your server using the address you have chosen.
