Using The HP MediaSmart Server EX485/487 To Access Your Media Remotely (Page 2 of 5)

Step 2: Configure Your Router

Next, click on the "Details" button in the Router section.  You will see the screen below.

Setting Up Remote Access In HP MediaSmart Server EX485 and EX487

This is one of the crucially important steps in the setup process.  Even the most basic of routers has built-in firewall protection of some kind, preventing unwarranted outsiders from tapping into your precious network.  What you need to do is tell the MediaSmart Server to open up sections of that firewall to allow you (with a secure password, of course) to "plug in" to your server over the Internet.

When you click the "Configure Router" button, the server will attempt to automatically configure your router to do this.  If you have a uPnP router, it should have no problem doing so.  Most modern routers support uPnP - even the super-cheap TrendNet router that I have!

In the unlikely event that your router does not support uPnP, you'll have to open the ports manually.  The procedure for doing this varies by router; consult your router's user manual for assistance.  The ports you will need to open are displayed in the image above.
