Sharing Your iTunes Library With Your HP MediaSmart Server to Mac and PC (Page 1 of 3)

I love iTunes, I'll confess.  Back in my PC only days, I really enjoyed using WinAmp (it's deliciously old school) but my media library kept growing, and it made sense to switch to more robust music management software.

I also know I'm in very good company... chances are, since you're hanging around MediaSmartHome, that you've got a pretty substantial media library too.  And, probably also like you, I've got multiple computers in my home... 2 laptops and 2 desktops, to be exact.

Before I had any media sharing solution, I had to copy whatever music files resided on my desktop manually over to my laptop, which was was almost as painful (and boring) as watching my hard drive defragment.  In addition, I had a Mac laptop and a PC desktop, which made it that much more annoying... networking between Macs and PCs can be a hassle sometimes, depending on your setup.

The MediaSmart Server Changes All This!

That's right, you heard me.  Whether you're on all PC's or a mixed Mac and PC household - the MediaSmart Server makes it really easy to listen to music on any computer in your home with iTunes.  There's other networking solutions out there (as there are always many solutions to any problem) but the MSS's way of doing it is elegant, convenient, and so easy to set up you won't even have to ask your kids for help!

Setting Up The iTunes Music Server on the MediaSmart Server

Yup, it's a server within a server, you could say.  The very first step in getting your iTunes library shared across your home is simple, and requires that you journey into your MediaSmart Server's Control Panel.

Note:  You can only access these administrator functions on a Windows based PC.

You'll want to click on the "Server for iTunes" bar on the left hand side of the Control Panel, and then click the "Configure" link as you see in the photo.

Then, as seen in the photo above, make sure that the server is marked as "Enabled," and optionally, you can rename your MediaSmart Server's iTunes share to anything you like, as well as add a password to access.  Finally, you can adjust how often the MSS will scan the music directory for new music to stream.  You're all set... now your iTunes library on your MediaSmart Server is being shared and broadcast on your network.
