FAQ: HP MediaSmart Server ex485 and ex487 (Page 9 of 9)
Categories: HP MediaSmart Server
Q. Why would someone choose to use the HP MediaSmart Server for remote access rather than an on-line portal such as gotomypc.com?
A. Online portals charge a monthly fee and provide access to only one PC at a time. Secure remote access is free (for at least one year) with the HP MediaSmart Server and provides access to all of the content on your Home Server, and to individual PCs with remote desktop capabilities. HP offers an attractive and user friendly UI for remote access.
Q. How does MediaSmart Server ensure secure remote access?
A. Remote access to the HP MediaSmart Server and it’s applications is through 128-bit secure https session only. Upon installation, you are given three options for setting up a secure, personal web address*. The web address can be used for remote access to shared folders and computers and by visitors to HP Photo Viewer. The three options are:
1) Register for a web address from TZO.com (e.g., https://yourname.hphome.com) that is free for the first year, then costs a nominal fee per year.
2) Upgrade to your own custom domain name from TZO.com (e.g., https://yourname.com) for a cost-competitive fee.
3) Register for a free Microsoft Live web address.
TZO domain names provide additional value beyond the Microsoft Live option:
Some broadband ISPs block Port 80 which is required for easy remote access. The TZO service allows you to obtain easy remote access even if Port 80 is blocked.
With the Microsoft domain name, if you don't already have a Microsoft Live account, you'll have to set that up.
And with the TZO custom domain name option, you can get your own domain name (e.g., smithfamily.com).

Q: How many computers can access the HP MediaSmart Server remotely simultaneously?
A: There’s no limitation set by the HP MediaSmart Server. You may be limited by the bandwidth of your broadband provider and their access policies.

I'll have to say I am pretty bummed that because a bought an EX470 only two months ago, I will not be able to take advantage of all the new features available with the new HP rev. This seems kind of strange since it's only a software upgrade. Are there capability issues with the AMD 64-bit chip? As it stands now the remote access and photo sharing applications are pretty clunky and I have hesitated to let older members of my family login and use these features. I was really hoping to leverage the new HP Software update. I guess I will continue to use www.orb.com for media streaming needs ...
HP needs to make this SOFTWARE update available to existing customers.
Will HP offer the media collector capabilities on the EX485/487 to us folks who just bought 475's? The media collector/streaming are roughly done at best and I am interested in getting the new application.
I have to agree, those of us who made the server so popular should be rewarded with and upgrade or a discount on a new box if the current processor can't support these items. I would have rather had a poll here for those items we would like to see because those 'chosen' are not my top ones.
So when are these upgrades going to be made available?
Can the HP MediaSmart Server recognize an internal hard drive over 2tera bytes?
