How To Install Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 (PP1)

Check to see if Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 is Installed

To check if PowerPack 1 has been installed :

  1. Double-click the Windows Home Server icon in the task tray.
  2. Log on to the Windows Home Server.
  3. On the Windows Home Server Console, click the Settings tab and then click Resources in the left panel. In our example PowerPack 1 has been installed, look at the section circled in red.

Installing Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 before August 12,2008

From July 21st through August 12th, Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 will only be available as a manual download. On August 12th, PowerPack 1 is expected to be available through Windows Update.

If Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 has not been installed go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ enter 944289 in the search all downloads field and press Go. Download Windows Home Server PowerPack 1; installation instructions are included there.

Installing Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 after August 12, 2008

If the HP MediaSmart Server is purchased after August 12th, Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 will NOT install as part of the initial setup.

After August 12, 2008 there will be 2 options for installing Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1:

1. You can download the PowerPack manually

or

2. You can let the Server download and install the PowerPack during the overnight maintenance period

Manual Download of Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1

  1. Double-click the Windows Home Server icon in the task tray.
  2. Log on to the Windows Home Server.
  3. On the Windows Home Server Console, click the Settings tab and then click General in the left panel.
  4. Click Update Now and follow the instructions from Microsoft to install Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1.

Install Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 Using Windows Update

1. If Windows Update is turned on, Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 will download and install overnight during the next maintenance window; the default time for the maintenance window is Midnight - 6 AM.

2. If Windows Update is not turned on, you will need to manually download the Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 using the instructions above.
