Hi Lucky, I finally got around to trying the fix you suggested of forwarding the ports you mentioned but still am not able to "discover" the server. Any more suggestions?
Step-by-Step to Installing the Microsoft Vista 64-bit Client Software for Windows Home Server
Categories: Setup and Installation Patches and Upgrades Computers and Laptops
The only thing else I could suggest is to make sure your server IP is permanent and does change. Like I said, I'm no network expert but the permanent IP and port forwarding solved my problem. Hopefully someone else can steer you in the right direction. Good luck.
What do you do if you do not have a 32 bit machine to begin this all with? There has to be a workaround for that. Right?
Not that I know of. See the very beginning of this thread:
Before you begin, it's important to note that the HP MediaSmart Server software and the Windows Home Server Connector must be installed on one network computer running a Microsoft Windows XP or Vista 32-bit operating system. If this software has not been installed, run the Software Installation CD that came with your HP MediaSmart Server.
You have to have a 32 bit Vista or XP system attached to the network. Unless someone else knows of a workaround. Sorry.
Once the 64-bit software has been installed, the Microsoft XP or Vista 32-bit computer can be removed from the network.
Once this is done, can a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit computers reside on the network?
Thanks,
My problem of being unable to install Home Server Connect was completely resolved by updating my nForce drivers. I had exhausted every hint, tip and piece of advice I could find on the internet and it wasn't until Microsoft reported back on the problem via the error reporting utility. Installation of Home Server Connect proceeded without a hitch.
We bought a media centre several months ago. We cannot connect to the server at all. Have made many attempts - all hopeless.
Andy-
THANK you. I've been fighting with my server for days. First file conflicts, then, after talking to HP support, a factory reset! I had to abort updates after they hung at 15% for over an hour. HP walked me through doing it manually from inside the console. All connectors installed OK UNTIL the new 64 bit Vista notebook. Your guidance worked and it worked perfectly. I did the second update from within settings. And I ran setup.exe instead of install.exe and it ran perfectly.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
A bit off topic here but the file conflict errors that brough me to all this were caused by folder replication. I will NOT be using that now. At least until MS does some work on that.
Thanks again Andy for following up and taking the time to get it posted here.

I have had my MediaSmart server for several months. My laptop (with XP) failed so I replaced it.
I tried to connect with the DVD and failed. I followed a winding trail and ended up here.
I just connected my HP DV6 1030 with Vista home Premium 64 bit to my MediaSmart server. I followed the instructions above and it installed without a problem.
I have Power Pack 2 installed.
My software version is 1.3.8.25155.
Thanks.

Reader's Digest Condensed version:
I had what I THOUGHT was a NIC problem that turned out to be a switch that needed to be reset. In the course, I let HP talk me into doing a full restore of my new Vista 64 DV6. IE, the HP MS SVR connector had to be reinstalled. It was the second thing I did - after Norton. From Explorer I entered ''\\svrname\Software\Home Server Connector Software" and clicked doubly on setup.exe. The 64bit version of connector installed effortlessly. It's a little painful, but I think it gets easier with repetition.
I just bought my new EX-485 and I have a mixuture of XP Home, Vista 32bit and Vista 64bit - so I stil have to follow this procedure or does the current Home Server software resolve the installation process?
I originally setup my server and connected with a Vista 32 laptop and two other PCs running XP. I changed out one PC a montha ago and replaced it with a Vista 64 machine running the Home Premium Edition. It connected to the server with no problem. I just replaced the remaining XP machine with another Vista 64 running the Home Premium Edition. It will not connect. I get an error saying that this edition of Windows can not be used with the HP Media Smart Server. What gives? It's the same edition I connected with on the other PC a month ago.
Anyone have any ideas.

Did you install the Windows Home Server Connector from the server onto both (really all) systems? I have Vista 32, Vista 64 and XP Pro connecting to my WHS. In each case they could "see" the server before the connector was installed. That is to say, I was able to get to some of the directories (folders for you younger non-DOS folk) before I installed the connector software. To install the connector from Windows (not internet) Explorer I entered ''\\svrname\Software\Home Server Connector Software" and clicked doubly on setup.exe - where svrname above is the name you've assigned to your server. The 64bit version of connector installed effortlessly. I DO think you need the latest updates to get the 64 bit connector. I have software version 1.3.8.25155 and BIOS version R02 Friday, July 13, 2007 - Woo! Friday the 13th! THAT explains a lot. To see this open the server console, click on settings and then hardware status on the left. I could be wrong but I think setup.exe detects the OS running on the system you are trying to connect and fetches the correct connector to install.

One other question....I keep seeing talk about an update 2.5 for the server but can not find it anywhere. When I look for updates from the server 2.5 doesn't show. Do you know where it can be downloaded? DOS??? I remember it well:)MHMOS said: I originally setup my server and connected with a Vista 32 laptop and two other PCs running XP. Sorry, the only way I know of to get updates is from within the server console.
Found this googling "windows home server update"

MHMOS said:NEVER! They ran under DOS and (mine) made intense use of batch files. With mine, you were ALWAYS somewhere in a batch file. Then I converted to a Windowed system (not to be confused with Windoze) and then the dub-ya, dub-ya, dub-ya (www) caught on fire and BBSs either converted or went into extinction. Like another poster, I originally setup my server and connected with two a Vista 32 laptops and one running XP. I changed out one PC a montha ago and replaced it with a Vista 64 machine running the Home Premium Edition. Can I run both the 32 and 64 bit laptops on the my server or is it an either or choice?
Even for those who are able to set up the 64-bit client software via a 32-bit OS, does that mean that the server will still only run in 32-bit mode, if so making it pointless having a 64-bit OS?
And is there any indication of when HP/Microsoft will sort this?

You don't run your laptops OS on the server, so you can have a 32 and 64 bit simultaneously.

What are you doing with it that would matter to the client whether WHS is 32 or 64 bit?
I'm obviously missing something here! As I understand it, if my OS on my desktop/laptop is transferring data 64 bits at a time, and yet WHS only does so 32 bits at a time, surely data transfer between PCs and server will be limited to 32 bits at a time?!

The main differences between a 32-bit OS and a 64-bit OS relate to memory accessibility and memory management, not how many bits are transferred between one networked device and another.
