I have tried and tried to get my server going. I have tried the restore and well as the full recovery but to no avail.
Any ideas before I pitch this puppy on the trash heap? I have to tell you that it should be this difficult to get something like this going. Each time I try to recover it gets quite a way throught then it tells me that it can't locate the serve, even when it's attach by wire AND it was recognized one time earlier.
Help would be appreciated.
How To Restore the HP MediaSmart Server
Categories: Backup and Restore
Like a few other folks in this forum, I reset my WHS firewall settings on my EX485 & lost all contact with my server. I tried to do a server recovery on my with no success. Not being concerned with data loss, I proceeded with multiple server resets with no success. Below is the process I ran through for each reset.
1) My MSS and laptop/desktop are on the same network/router (Airport Extreme DHCP)
2) I uninstalled the MSS Console from my Laptop & desktop
3) I inserted the server recovery DVD into the laptop and followed it until it instructed me to put the MSS into recovery mode.
4) I removed the system drive & on another computer, I completely wiped & reformatted 20 GB partition on the system drive in NTFS. I reinserted & lock the system drive in place.
5) I turned the MSS off (hold power button for 4 seconds) and there were no USB devices plugged it.
6) I turned on the MSS and waited for the OS light to flash Blue and Red. When this happened I pressed the recovery mode button ONCE with a pin.
7) I waited (Approx 30 seconds) for the OS light to flash Red and Purple.
8) I went back to my laptop & found the server.
9) I selected reset.
10) I waited until this process finished (Approx 60 minutes) & then pressed next....
11) On my laptop, the connector software never finds the MSS again during any of the attempts. I have all blue lights across the bottom front with no system drive light.
12) I can see the MSS listed on my Airport Extreme (ID'ed by MAC address, IP address, & Client ID [minint-cvltfco]).
13) All follow-on attempts to manually & automatically fail to connect to server.
14) All attempts to use remotely access MSS via the IP address &/or server name [tried minint*, tried HPSERVER, tried SERVER) failed.
Does anyone have any ideas? Is there something I'm missing?
I don't know what you are missing, but you may have deleted the database of your files with reformatting the C partition.
I know waht I have done. I bought a new Western Digital 1TB drive.
I installed the new system drive and installed WHS on it with the factory reset CD. Install the Console on your laptop. Do all the updates from M$ and HP.
Then I installed the old drives in bay 2 and so on. DO NOT ADD these to the pool !!. Connect with the WHS and reconfigure all useraccounts and sharedfolders on the WHS.
Connect to the WHS with Remote Desktop Control. In "my computer" you will find the old drives as E,F,G etc. You will find most of the files on these drives. You will be able to copy these files from the old sharedfolders to the new sharedfolders on your D drive.
After this oan reinstall al client computers. You will find all the data back in your shared folders.
All your client pc's must be backupped again because the old ones have been lost.
When everything is successfull (BUT ONLY THEN) you can add the old drives to the pool. The drives will be reformatted and the old data deleted.
I hope this will help you. I got most of my data back. With me the problems began with a failure of the update to HP 1.3 software. Now it is working very well and stable. Good luck
@DvO: Did you install WHS while the drive was in the server? Or did you build the system drive off your client as an attached external drive via USB connection?

This may take a while because the drive will be formatted and partitionned.
how can i install back my media smart software. hope you can help me for this. thank you .
Realized all my PC's are 64bit Windows Vista or 7
Even the laptops. Vista 64bit has now become common when you purchase Windows PC's with over 4gig memory.
Turns out While 64bit clients are supported recovery is not for my EX470
Luckily I was able to dig out an old Pentium3 Lifebook and so far seems to be working.
Hopefully I will not lose my data on the other three drives. Arrgh

ugh! - after wasting a full day trying to diagnose why the server recover software wasn't finding my server (using HP's support docs) I finally found this thread... I had the stinking drive lock in the unlock position! - flipped it to LOCK, & the server recover software found the server instantly. Thanks, Lele!
Was hopeful that Pat's response would help my situation, but my drives were already in the locked position... This sucks.

What was your problem? I couldnt see any other posts on here from you...

All systems with more than 4GB RAM should be 64 bit as 32 bit systems cannot address more memory than that...
If people are having troubles getting the server to restore/recover and it is stopping part way through, my first advice is to try to replace the drive, any SATA drive over about 80GB should do it. I bought my server from a high street shop and the drive installed at POS died after only a few weeks. Luckily HP replaced the disk FOC after a few calls to them, but I had to prove date of purchase as the insurance i was sold with the server from PCWorld did not cover parts or tech support...
Having replaced the disk drive i now run my HP EX 470 with 8TB of Hard disk space (which i hope will not fail again!)

See http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssoftware/thread/695c6186-c481-4b7... for the full description. Basically, I have been locked out of my Home Server, and am unable to connect a brand new VM to it; discovery.exe gives the dreaded "This operation cannot be completed at this time" error.
After I did a recovery and loaded the console software manually I could no longer access the server. So I rebooted the server and now the harddrive does not light up.
any suggestions
Well, I was unable to get anywhere with reconnecting to the WHS, so I bit the bullet and gave this procedure a try. It worked great; apparently hitting the button with the paperclip puts it into a "ready for imaging" mode that connects via a different process/protocol than the WHS Console, which was unable to connect for me.
So, I did a system restore initially, and could see all my data. Then I replaced the system drive (the original 500 GB one, this is an EX470) with a 1.5 TB drive, and this time did a factory restore. Thanks for posting this useful guide.
Hi,
I wonder if anybody can help me, I'm having problems doing a server recovery on my EX490.
Scenario, the Ex490 came with 1TB Seagate drive with the image preloaded on a 20GB partition, i added 2 * 1.5TB Samsung drives - no issues at this point. I have copied about 1TB worth of data and enabled folder duplication. all is working fine.
But then I decided to change my system drive for a 500Gb Western Digital - reason being if I had lost the system drive I would lose all the data on 1TB Seagate drive so i wanted to minimise the impact so hence decided to replace system drive.
I have replaced the system drive with 500gb, still have the 2 1.5TB samsung drives in and I start doing a server recovery because i don't want to loose the partitions on the other drives.
It goes thru all the motions and then says Server recovery operation succeeded - Rebooting server may take 5 mins or more click finish to reboot the server. I click finish server appears to reboot everything looks fine - but then when I try to install HP connector software it doesn't find the server. I have tried all sorts of host names but to no avail.
Then i went thru the whole process again but this time with only the 500gb hdd attached but i get to the same stage and it can't find the server.
After ringing tech support they advised to put the drive in another computer and see whats on it - so i did and find there's nothing on the drive.
What am i doing wrong ?
I MUST APOLOGISE IF THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN ANSWERED.

I MUST APOLOGISE IF THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN ANSWERED.The recovery did not work for me. I installed a new HD and did a factory reset and now I can use the server again. But I am having trouble viewing the data on the old HD. When I connect the old HD and remote into the server it does not see it in the hardware management. Any suggestions, can I hook up the old HD to another computer and retrieve the data from it?
THERE IS AN ERROR HERE.
STEP 7: After the Server Recovery or Factory Reset completes, the server automatically restarts. Before taking the next step wait until the Health indicator light is solid blue OR THE DRIVE LIGHTS ARE PURPLE AND THE HEALTH LIGHT IS PURPLE.
Thank you thank you thank you! I could not get my server to install v3 of the HP Software. I would get it blinking blue and "aqua"; I'd install the software, the server would reboot and start the process again. I wanted to do a factory reset, and tried both the original 500GB drive and a 1.5GB data drive with the same results. Also, the drive lights never came on.
The tip about disconnecting USB devices did the trick! I actually had an external 1TB SATA drive connected that I'd forgotten about. I disconnected it, reran the setup process from my Windows7/64 machine and it went without a glitch this time.
Thanks again!
I'm facing the same issue as Jay described in the server restore steps above in the first thread here. I went through the Server restore steps. It found the server in the first stage but then after the restoration process (This may take up to 60 minutes).. the Connector Softwate can no longer find the Server. I tried this several times, even going directly to a switch shared with the WHS by passing my router all together. Is there a default server name that I could use? Or some other solution to find the server?
I'm at a lost here. Does anyone have a solution??? Pls. help..
Thanks
KEvin
Hi,
What I eventually did was to do a full factory restore to resolve issue and then transferred data manually as I hooked up my HDD's to a PC, but before i did this I noticed a few things which might help people.
When I was at the following stage Server recovery operation succeeded - Rebooting server may take 5 mins or more click finish to reboot the server. I click finish server appears to reboot everything looks fine - but then when I try to install HP connector software it doesn't find the server.
I then took the HDD out of the Media Server and hooked it up to a PC and found it hadn't installed anything, the HDD was same as prior to the system recovery. I then rang HP helpdesk in USA they were no help as they thought I had a faulty disk but couldn't send me a replacement as they were in the states. They were USELESS.
I believe when the media server states "Rebooting server may take 5 mins or more click finish to reboot the server." this is when it will transfer the image to the HDD and you need to leave it for a few hours as the image is about 4.7Gb.
Try this
Are you saying, DON'T click 'Finish' when it tells you to 'Rebooting server may take 5 mins or more click finish to reboot the server." ?
Did that work for you?
Can anyone help? I am trying to do a server recovery and have placed the Server Install DVD into my laptop and set the Home Server into recovery mode. However the DVD on my laptop states to place the DVD into my Home Server and boot. I have a headless, no DVD machine, so I can't figure out how to use the DVD to start the recovery process. Can anyone help me with the steps? Do I need a different DVD to start the recovery process?
Thanks
....ryan
Ryan,
Maybe it is a typo but you say you want to do a server recovery and you have put the server INSTALL CD/DVD in the laptop! Surely the CD/DVD you should be using is the Server RESTORE one!
